First Build

Is the $60 additional cost for a i7-3770 worth it over a i5-3570k? Or $80 over a i5-3570?

For sure, the i7 is substantially better at performance and over time it would will coupe a lot better then a i5 down the road.

I'm looking at reviews and benchmarks that would dispute that claim maDIEmG, or at least suggest the additional cost doesn't match the performance increase. The i7 would be better than the i5 when the games/software are able to take advantage of the additional HT available, but I don't think games will be doing that for another 2 years down the road. We're getting there, but not all the way yet (don't know why gaming companies don't go ahead and code for it).
 
Yeah it's not worth it unless you do something like video editing/rendering/3d CAD that take advantage of the hyperthreading.
 
Yeah guys I misspoke about my intentions with the blu ray drive. I only intend to watch the movies straight from the DVD and/or download the digital copy. I thought maybe the downloading required a special drive or something but I guess not since it goes through itunes. I assume burning them is not the case here? Either way I think I will head to a store and talk to someone in person before I buy this part. The LG one I have picked seems to do the job though

I don't feel like I need the an i7..... I already feel like I'm overdoing it a little based on my needs and don't think the extra money would be worth it. However with Haswell coming out and me getting another new job (:)) I may wait to consider that

I've taken a few suggestions though and at least considered all of them, so thanks! I'll be sure to post a final list before I end up buying everything, and after everything's put together

Yeah you don't need a drive to watch movies you download, only if you buy the physical blu ray disk. Don't talk to people in stores, 99% of them know nothing, lol.

Also the 770 just came out, you may want to consider it or the 760ti assuming it comes out soon too. The 770 is about the same as/slightly better than the 680 and only $400.

Okay I'm about to buy all my parts.... One question about the video card though. This is a question regardless of which one I choose to buy, but it seems like there are a ton of different options for the same card. I guess you choose one that coincides with your motherboard?


Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD4H ATX LGA1155 Motherboard

Video Card: Gigabyte GV-N770OC-2GD GeForce GTX 770

Does that model for the video card seem right? What do I have to pay attention to so I don't order the wrong one?


Also just to get more opinions on that.... For $50 more I just decided to upgrade the video card to the new 770. Since it's new do you guys think it's even worth it? Atleast compared to the 670?

You do not have to buy the same brand to match your motherboard. It's just happenstance or coincidence. Granted, depending on the way some are built, they will actually work better together, but it is definitely not a requirement. I got a Gigabyte mobo paired with an EVGA card, and I plan on doing the same for my next build as I like Gigabyte's warranty and quality in their motherboards and the same applies for EVGA in their GPUs.

You get my thumbs up approval for the 770. Hope you love it and how great your PC will run overall.

The two immediate things I noticed about the card you should be aware of: The size of the card is large, so if there's anyway you can, make sure that the case you're getting can fit that card. Second, you may have a few issues with the video drivers. Nothing major, but you want to maybe read up on it, and use some of the older drivers to avoid possible, initial problems.

I do have everything picked out. Just wanted clarification on the video card before I forked over the money lol. And yeah the drivers are one thing I'm worried about with the 770. The case I've chosen will most likely be fine (I'm hoping at least... it is my first build haha). It's something minor but I just want to minimize the amount of possible issues I may run into once everything is put together. I do like EVGA but I have the gigabyte motherboard picked out, and wasn't sure if that may have caused a problem.


Here's what I'm building. I have bought a few things (case, power supply, hard drives, CPU) but I have not bought everything yet.

Just bought all the rest of the things from Newegg :) A little nerve racking hahaha

Since I kind of left this thread without an ending.... Here was what I ended up buying. Wish me luck building it! I'll post pics by the end of next week when it's hopefully all together

The build looks good. There are some parts that people would question why you would buy it, but then, they probably didn't read all the prior 4 pages worth of posts discussing your purchases so you look good. Be sure to post some pics of that PC when you get it all set up (trust me, it's a prideful moment when you start taking pics of when you get the order, then assemble it...)

Haha yes I can't wait. There are some things I definitely would have done differently if I wanted to wait and save/spend more, and if I wasn't so nervous about putting it all together in working fashion. This wasn't meant to be just a gaming computer, but it was obviously geared towards it.
