DirectX issue?

I am trying to play Medieval 2 Total War and every time I try to open it it gives me this message:

"File or assembly name Microsoft.DirectX.AudioVideoPlayback, or one of its dependencies, was not found"

I reinstalled the game several times to no avail.

I have checked around the internet for solutions but I don't think I am implementing their solutions correctly.

One solution is to have all of the proper .NET framework downloaded onto my computer.

Another solution was to download a version of DirectX 9 for some reason.

I don't know if I am just not downloading the proper versions for my computer or what so I am hoping someone here has had similar issues that can provide a solution.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit

Thanks.

If you are going to uninstall .net frameworking, you should use the removal tool that removes all versions so you can start from scratch. Use the uninstall tool in this link: .NET FRAMEWORKING Removal Tool

Once you have completed this removal tool, restart your computer. Once you have restarted your computer, download and install the following: .NET FRAMEWORKING Version 4

After you perform these tasks PLEASE make sure to restart your computer and then check Windows updates for security patches or service packs to .NET Frameworking. Once you no longer have anymore updates try running the game again. Report back with an update once you've performed these tasks and good luck! :)

Sicko,

I don't think NET Framework 4.0 will work for this game. The link I provided has 2.0, 2.0sp1, 3.0, 3.0sp1 and 3.5. The game actually needs 2.0 but I figured it couldn't hurt to have all of those versions.

My reasoning for this is previous experience. I remember when LoL first came out, the installer didn't install NET Framework 3.5 which was needed. Many people installed NET Framework 4.0 thinking it would work but it didn't. Others had new Windows 7 machines which included NET Framework 4.0 and it didn't work either. You needed to have that specific version installed.

Many people think NET Framework 4.0 is cumulative but for some applications, it requires a specific version.

I understand that. I usually start with 4.0 and patch it up through updates and then if the problem persists then you go with installing an earlier version. Don't forget the reason I start with 4.0 is the fact that a lot of other software will use it, not just video games.

Yes, it doesn't hurt to have 4.0. You are right, a lot of applications use it. I have it installed on my machine right now. It seemed like you were recommending 4.0 and that's all he would need. I am thinking he will need the older versions installed as well.

That install will not work. It is for 32bit Windows XP. This user is running 64bit Windows 7. BTW, DX9, 10 and 11 all come standard on Windows 7.

If you don't install the DX9 runtime, he won't be able to run DX9 games. Older titles will overwrite certain DX9 files and break other DX9 games. I updated the link to the latest redistributable.

Yea, the June 2010 redist is the latest. He should install that. I don't know why you're troubleshooting a DirectX problem by messing with .Net. .Net has enough issues without trying to uninstall and reinstall it.

As mentioned before, DX9 comes standard on Windows 7 along with DX10 and DX11. The June 2010 DX9 update is included in Windows 7 as well. The reason we are suggesting NET Framework is because after Googling the error, that is what others have suggested with success. Just because the error mentions DX doesn't mean DX is the problem. It could be the way the program is accessing DX.

Yes I understand that a version of DX9 comes with Win 7 x64 ( I have the same OS) But he needs to install the redist to correct changed files. Many installers for games will change DX9 files to suit their needs, sometimes breaking other DX9 titles.

For instance, if you try to play Flatout 2 (DX9) without first installing the DX9 redist it will fail to launch. That's on a vanilla Win 7 Pro x64 install.

All I'm saying is he should try that before screwing with .Net uninstall/reinstall because that crap rarely uninstalls clean.

And I understand what you're saying as well. However, both Sicko and I are recommending troubleshooting .NET Framework because that's what seemed to fix it for others getting this exact same error. While your solution won't hurt, it probably won't resolve the issue either. We will just have to wait and see.

Seems to me like differences of opinion on how to best help this person in need has generated some friction. I'd like to hear the user reply before pushing the point any further so this can stay constructive and helpful instead of a debate. Thank you everyone that is trying to help solve the issue.

Sorry for the delayed response. I am doing the .NET framework try right now. Then I will try the DX9 thing.

Hooray! Okay, I did the .NET framework uninstall and reinstall. Updated it and restarted my computer. Game still wouldn't open. Downloaded the dx9 from the link that was provided by serenakos and it worked! It appears that it was the dx9. Thank you all for the input regardless!

Good to hear. I hate how companies started mucking around with their own flavor of DX9 installs and breaking other titles. Such a pain.

if need be.. he can do a complete uninstall of .NET framework by running the corresponding Hotfix uninstaller.
