Usually you get a Steam profile background specific to that game, an emoticon for that game, and sometimes a bonus item, like a limited time coupon on a specific Steam game.

You also gain XP to rank up your Steam level. New levels will increase your friends list limit, or allow new profile customization options.

It's mostly fluff.
