Anime Angel Beats

You should watch Kanon (2006). It's everything Clannad tried to copy (concept wise) except the story. And I can say this because Clannad aired after both the 2002 Kanon series and the 2006 version. 2006 is better. The story is the same, but the 2006 version is more well done.

I would blame the similarities less on copying and more on the fact that both were made by the same people. (key, kyoani)
Now where's my Rewrite adaptation.

I thought it was implied they were by the same company originally :/. And even in playing the VN for Clannad, you can see where they really made the anime so much weaker. It had so much more potential. But if you look at the Kanon VN compared to the anime, both plots are more or less a linear story so everything flows very well. Where in Clannad it's just a route. Oh well.

I would love to see a Rewrite adaptation though. As long as they don't screw it over like they did with Little Busters! :( I only did part of Rin's route on LB before I stopped and I was really disappointed with how the anime started to progress. It really shames the VN imo. Hopefully they get a good studio and company for Rewrite if they do get one.
 
Fullmetal, I've seen that image floating around quite a bit, and I'm sorry to tell you that it is completely fake. The background clearly shows an extremely poor fade between two separate images. The one on the right looks like she's from the 2006 version (though I could be wrong), and the one on the left isn't even from Kanon. After checking, she seems to be Karin from the completely unrelated show, "Kamichama Karin". Kanon 2002 is more like:

(which is still pretty bad, at least compared to KyoAni's amazing job with 2006, but I still feel that Clannad is and always will be the single greatest show ever)

As for Angel Beats, I thought it was amazing, until the ending which completely ruined the entire thing.

ENDING SPOILERS:
The thing with main guy being Angel's heart donor. I can tell it was meant to pull the heartstrings but it left a terrible gaping plot hole: she was in the afterlife before him. I mean, seriously? They could have cut that part out and the story would have been so much better. That part ruined it for me because it felt so sloppy of them and as such I couldn't help but feel that with the ending, the writers sacrificed quality for tearbait. I always hear people say "Oh, but the afterlife might not be chronological" or something like that. If they had explained, mentioned, or even alluded to something like that in the show, I'd be on board with the whole thing. But they didn't, so that explanation just seems like fans making excuses for the writers.

You've literally just stated the "the afterlife isn't chronological!" thing. I've seen that timeline before, but I can't accept that because it's made up by fans. The big question is, WHY does Kanade magically go backwards in the afterlife timeline? The anime never says that happened. The way I see it, the ending is a big plot hole that they left the viewers to make excuses for. If people can go backwards into the afterlife, couldn't they have MENTIONED that at all, in 13 episodes? It would only take a couple lines of dialogue! The writers should make sure their ending can be properly explained, not let fans make up their own explanation which may or may not be true and/or make sense.

Just for the record, I don't really want to be bashing Angel Beats. I loved it and planned to give it at least 4.5/5, but the ending was so stupid I had to drop it down to 3.

The worst part was is that even the show's wiki has no logical explanation.

there is a continuity in Kanade's existence; Otonashi's heart was transplanted to her so she would have been alive when he was dead yet Kanade was already in the afterlife before Otonashi.

It actually makes perfect sense. They were in the afterlife due to them not being able to do something in the real world. Kanade always wanted to thank the person who donated her a heart. Therefore Otonashi was brought to the afterlife in order for Kanade to have the chance to move on. That's how it works.

But Kanade has never been shown playing God. If she had the power to pluck people in and out of this purgatory, would she do it? It saddened her to see people leave, why would she allow more to come in so she can be subjected to the same torture?

Of course, you are correct. She did want to thank the person who gave her life.

Or maybe...just go with this...Otonashi sat in actual purgatory before moving onto the school.
 
I find that all of KEY's shows (except for Air) pull at my eyeballs.

Did you watch the first season of Little Busters? It was overly rushed and probably made the VN cry. Second season should be better.
