High or low settings??

Hello. Here comes another stupid question from Poo.

For better FPS, is it better to have your settings all on low so your CPU works more or is it better to have all the settings on high, turn off the shadow setting(s), let your GPU do more work? If you wondering why I'm asking this, it's because I saw this post in the PS2 forums:


"get away from low settings because those pull on the CPU more. if your like me go to high or ultra settings and turn off shadows that puts it more on the GPU"

I think if this was a viable theory it would be more well known, i'll do some research to see if it actually is true and get back to you

Honestly, it depends. You have to keep in mind is it a single-thread or multi-thread game (do single, dual, quad, or hexa cores have advantages). What's the optimization like? For a long time, Planetside 2 users actually played the game on high/ultra settings because low settings actually have worse FPS (optimization issues). I would say this question should be asked on a per game basis, or if you're just looking for a blanket, general average?

I'm having a difficult time understanding how you pull on the CPU when taking less stress off of it. Does the word "paradox" ring a bell?
Disabling those in-game graphic functions takes less stress off of your GPU, which results in less power consumption and thus less demand from your CPU.

I guess Snipeye is right though; It really depends on the game you're playing, for the exact types of reasons that he mentioned.
