This is a very outdated "zombie" argument, and all I'm seeing here is "PERSONAL PREFERENCE - PERSONAL PREFERENCE - PERSONAL PREFERENCE."
This is like the old continuous argument that people had about Windows Vista vs XP, and even Windows vs Linux.

I first got on Windows 8 and HATED it, as I felt it were too similar to playing on a Nintendo Wii... Though now I choose Windows 8.1 Pro because not only have I found that the Windows 8 GUI is customizable, but Windows 8 has been proven to utilize RAM more efficiently than Windows 7 does - which is very important for my line of work, Windows 8 has a lot faster boot time, and Windows 7 only has partial support for Direct3D 11.1 while Windows 8 has full support, and I am just that anal about performance. Additionally, as I have embraced the superior performance of Windows 8 - I have also grown to PERSONALLY PREFER (pun) the features of 8 that 7 doesn't have.
And it's completely safe to presume that Windows 8 is easily more "future proof" while Windows 7 is becoming far more obsolete, even if we do see a more similar GUI to Windows 7 with Windows 9... But there are far too many more things to consider other than just a GUI, as GUI comparisons for the most part are solely based on PERSONAL PREFERENCE and are becoming even more modular and modifiable with the more modern OS versions. Which brings me to state that I also enjoy the fact that you can now change the Windows 8 GUI to being like 7 (or similar).


The only major factor in this entire argument is that people have a hard time embracing change, and the world of technology is constantly evolving and changing everyday. You either get with it, or you get left behind. Windows 8 is superior in performance, but for anyone to say that one OS is overall any better than another is merely speaking from their own personal opinion.
I am a performance (power and speed) enthusiast, while someone else may be an aesthetic enthusiast. You're always going to select what you PERSONALLY PREFER, and no one can tell you what that is... as that's always going to differ from everyone else.

Hell, I know people who are still using Windows XP.

Having this program startisback solved all my original frustrations with win 8. It gives you the start menu, the button, and default to start up on desktop not that gui thing that does look like a Wii screen. It was like $2 and well worth it. (looks like it went up to $3 for 1 license)

Just going through that list:

1. Start Button is back with Windows 8.1.

2. Start Menu has been replaced with Start Screen. I really don't notice a difference in functionality with the exception being that I don't have to drill down through menus to find the program I want. Instead I have to scroll. Not really a big deal either way.

3. It's a theme. I am baffled that removing a theme in favor of another theme is even mentioned.

4. Flip3D sucks and I don't know anybody that seriously uses it. One of those things you do once because it looks cool and never do again. A basic app switcher like the one in Windows 8 is just more functional.

5. Moot point with all of the readily available media playback options that are available for free. If you purchase a system from a major manufacturer they usually provide their own anyways. If you built your own system you should have the savvy to find a DVD playback app.

6. Gadgets, and the entire sidebar, were removed in a security hotfix a year and a half ago in Windows 7 and Vista. If you are still using them please install the patch immediately. Failure to do so leaves you vulnerable. I am amazed that the people writing the article are ignorant to this fact.

7. Another non-issue. Updates are handled just as they have been in every Windows version since XP. The lack of a balloon telling me that it's doing this is not something that I'm concerned with.

8. WMP sucks. Nobody cares that it's gone.

9. Recent Documents was replaced by a better system in which you go to your start screen and just type the name of the document and it will pop up. Doesn't matter if it's recent or not. Much better system.

10. System Backup failed enough that I'd consider it a plus that they ditched it. It gave people a false sense of security.

I don't seriously have a preference between Windows 7 and Windows 8. Once you've used them both for any amount of time you stop noticing the differences. The vast majority of the differences are aesthetic anyways. They function the same way, it just looks a little different. I'm just surprised at the nitpicking that this article does. Even for how old it is you can tell that they were struggling to come up with 10 things to talk about.
