I have $400 to spend on upgrades and don't know what to get. My whole computer pretty much need to be upgraded.

CPU | Intel Pentium
GPU| EVGA GT 640 4GB
RAM| 8GB (only 4 usable because of GPU)
500 GB hard drive

I have no clue what Motherboard I have. All I know is that is has an 1155 socket and it takes up to 16GB or DDR3 RAM.
 
If you have a GT 640 4GB video card, that means the video card has 4GB of onboard RAM, RAM that's on the card, not in your PC. If you got 8 GB DDR3 installed, you got that much on the computer. If you're not sure, you can type in dxdiag in your search bar from your start menu and it will show you your basic PC info.

1) How do you know the RAM isn't usable?
2) Are you running Windows XP?
3) Did you test the RAM to make sure it works?
4) Did you verify you have 2 sticks of 4GB RAM installed in the PC?

You can't play BF4 very well because the GT 640 isn't a powerful card, nor is it likely whatever Pentium version you have as well.
 
If you planning on playing the more demanding games. You will need to get at least i5 and newer graphic card. You have find the model of mobo before doing any of these first.
 
When I go to properties and look at my pc setting windows says I have 8GB installed but only 4GB usable

This answers my question 2. 32bit OS can only read up to 3.5GB worth of RAM. To benefit from having more than that, such as your 8GB of RAM, you need a 64-bit OS.

Part of your upgrade budget should be to buy a 64-bit OS, otherwise, any parts we would recommend for you is really wasted.

Priority:
1) 64bit OS
2) Motherboard
3) CPU
4) GPU
5) RAM/PSU
 
Darwin, if you need some help, I can help you get a 64 bit os for free. Lots of people on here probably can too. If you still need help getting it, pm me and I would be glad to help. Then you can atleast use all 8 GB of ram

i have s burnt copy of windows 7 ultimate

there are a few perks of my brother being a computer programmer and developer and being Microsoft certified
 
Get your OS fixed. Next,check your mother board model by opening your computer and looking for model name in the mobo.
