Low fps with a GTX 970

Currently playing GTAV and I feel as though my fps is lower than what it should be. I understand when out roaming that the fps will be lower due to what is on screen.

Resolution 1600x900 ( upgrading soon)
CPU- Intel I5 3350P 3.1Ghz
RAM- 8gigs
GPU- Zotac GTX 970
Avg fps is roughly 30-40ish
All settings are on high, with shadows at normal( idc for shadows tbh), no FXAA, the high detailed streaming when flying as well as shadows is turned off. Extended distance scaling is half a bar.

The drivers are up-to-date as I updated before playing the game. Temperatures are also fine, not going above 50c when gaming.

I just feel I should be getting high fps than that with a 970, especially at that resolution.
 
That's weird, I'm running an AMD based computer, and I'm running on high-very high with 60 fps

Although my temperatures are insane even with liquid cooling and 6 fans...
 
Ill have to officially check through the task manager. But in game settings its only at 2.3-2.4gigs

RAM and VRAM are two differant things. VRAM is your memory of your video card.
This post shows you how to monitor it.
 
Couple of possible tweaks as suggested on the GTA forums:

Reduce vegetation.
Change the MSAA settings
Adjust DirectX version

The MSAA is being suggested quite often...
 
According to MSI Afterburner I'm using 3.2gigs of VRAM, atleast from the last session.
 
how much ram on the grfx card.? You should try keeping the detail on normal instead of high. It uses too much graphics ram. I have the 960
 
I've reduced vegetation down, turned MSAA off with just fxaa being on. The fps is now roughly 50-60 unless im driving real fast which I understand why.
However with that said, I forgot to mention since I didn't notice it again untill earlier, I've been getting Coil Whine, it's very audible but not annoying when I have a headset on.

But it's only on GTA5, no other game, even with V-sync on/off. The temperatures are not getting to high, as mentioned only 50-60c range.

Do you know whats causing the noise?
 
Coil whine has plagued pretty much all GTX 970's since they came out. You can contact the manufacturer to see if you can get a replacement as not all 970s have that issue (though it is a VERY common issue).

As for everything else, just out of curiosity, how fast is your RAM? The 8GBs? Is it 2x4GBs or 1x8GB?

It is not annoying enough to warrant a replacement. I just found it odd that it suddenly happens in GTA5 and only GTA5. Maxing Dragon Age Inquisition and Crysis 3, never onced coil whined.

The RAM is a single 8GB stick
ADATA 8GB ddr3 1600

I'm not at all familiar with the brand but it was the cheapest at the time and being the impatient person I am I took the risk. Also I noticed the RAM was running at 1060mhz instead of 1600, idk why since I never mess with the bios settings. But its now running at 1600mhz

A-Data isn't a bad brand; it's been around for years now, at least a decade if I recall correctly. I was thinking if the RAM was running at slower speeds than it should or what you needed. Wondering if that helped with the FPS at all...
 
I have been reading alot about this issue. It seems that the 970 has a major issue with GTA5. Most people even 5-10x better rig then what you have said are also having issues. I don't know if this is a Card issue to how it was designed ( the 3.5 gig / .5 gig split memory instead of true 4 gig or not. Seeing how GTA5 is the only game to truly push the boundary yet its hard to tell but considering other cards are not having the issue it seems isolated to the card. Hopefully Nvidia figures out a way to fix this otherwise this card is extremely gimped from what its selling points were.

* I also read but cant confirm that the newer 970's do not have this that it pertains to older models but there is no concrete proof of this yet so i recommend waiting for a patch*

havent read most of the replies but I use SLI 970'S MSI and get around 90 fps on all very high etc except vsync off and turned of msa or w/e from 18x to off

I believe my brother only gets like 100 ish fps on titan x and very good rig whilst streaming but still good enough.

do you know what they mean by older-vs-newer models?
