I don't know if this article was every posted in the past but I am posting it now. I hope it helps everyone out in finding the right Power Supply for your needs.

I have an Antec HCP-1200 and it has a 5 year warranty on it. Just before the 3 year mark, it started to give me problems like random reboots without any warning. Talking to other clan members about my possible problems, it sounds like my PSU is on it's way out.

After extensive research on PSU's, I found out that the average PSU will start to have problems after 3 years of life. Some after that and some before that.

I will be sending my PSU back to Antec while it's still under warranty. If I can get 2 to 3 more years out of it, I'd be very happy.

On my next computer build, I'll be purchasing a Seasonic 1200 Platinum PSU. After extensive research, I found that Corsair, Antec, Thermaltake, EVGA and many other PSU manufacturers don't even build their own PSU's. There outsourced to many different companies to build for them like Flextronics, Delta, FSP, Seasonic, to name a few. I figure why should I purchase an expensive PSU from a highly reputable company and pay an outrageous price, when I can get it cheaper from the original manufacturer and there identical with only a name change.

I was interested in the Corsair 1200AXi but found that Flextronics makes it for them and Corsair just slaps on their label and over-charges for the PSU.

Why are you needing a 1200 watt power supply? SLI doesnt even get close to needing 1200 watts of power.
 
What kind of rig are you running Cigarjohn? I run sli fine with an 850 psu. If you had a r9 295x2 gpu I could understand needing more power (would require a 1500psu).
 
Can't really go wrong with evga, 10 year warranty... And they do honor it I had mine for two years it went out they sent me a new one in a couple day's and a return label for the old one.

Get a EVGA P2 or G2 man 10yr warranty awesome PSU's and company can't go wrong

True, but it doesn't hurt to have more power just incase you may need it down the road. Also, I'm running 10 hard drives in 3 different RAID configurations along with overclocking. True, 1200 is overkill.

Sometimes those fabulous warranties aren't all cracked-up to what they seem to be. I'm running EVGA Graphic Cards in SLI and the company has excellent support. But EVGA doesn't make there own PSU's, they just purchase someone's else's PSU build and slap there name on it like Corsair does. Not putting down EVGA or Corsair. I think I may give Seasonic a try. They pretty much PSU's for everyone with the same exact specks for much less. But I'll always stay with the EVGA Graphic Card Line.

That's great to hear. When I thought I had problems with my Graphic Cards, there support was right there with tons of help. A good company to deal with.

I like to overkill everything I do in life. Here's my old build that's around 4 years old now.

ASUS Maximus IV Extreme Z-68 motherboard
Intel i7 2600k 3.4ghz clocked to 5.2ghz
Dual EVGA GTX-580's Hydro Copper 855mhz clocked to 925mhz in SLI
16 gigs of Mushkin 7 latency RAM clocked to 1866mhz at 9 latency
ASUS Xonar Xense Sound Card
Viewsonic VP2655wb LCD
LSI 9300 MegaRaid Card
(2) 128 gb Crucial M4 SSD's in RAID 0
(4) 256 gb Crucial M4 SSD's in RAID 0 seperated
(4) 2 TB Seagate Enterprise HDD's in a RAID 10 internal backup
Antec HCP-1200 PSU
Koolance ERM3K3UC external ambient liquid cooler system
Windows 7 64
Logitech G13
Logitech G510
Logitech G502

On certain games like B4 and GuildWars2 with all settings maxed out on Ultra, my systems wattage load is around 920 watts, give or take a few.

My older graphic cards do use more energy than the more efficient cards that are being built today.

I still dont see why you'd need a 1200 watt power supply even with 10 hard drives in a raid configuration.

Honestly, I steer clear of anything EVGA. Especially a power supply.

Well, I don't know enough about their PSU's and I'm happy with ASUS Motherboards. But so far, I haven't had any problems with their graphic cards.

And 1200 would be overkill. But I have money put aside for a new build every 6 years and it's just a few dollars more for 1200. It can't hurt anything.
 
Well, here's my follow up on this article. After talking to Antec about my problem, they sent me an email stating they will be sending me free postage to ship my defective PSU back to them at their expense. And since my HCP-1200 is discontinued, they will be giving me a brand new HCP-1300 with a 7 year warranty for free. I can't pass this up. Though, 4.3 years for a PSU that had a 5 year warranty on it wasn't too bad. They said that it shouldn't have gone bad and the new PSU is guranteed at least 7 years without any failure. Well you really can't gurantee anythng 100%, but hey, it's a free replacement. I'm not going to pass that up.

Hopefully I can get at least two more years with this new PSU before failure so I can start building my new system. Then I'll probable go with a different PSU manufacturer.

Exactly. If you go over budget because your buying a reliable PSU, don't cheap out on it. You can almost always find another way to cut costs then risking your entire build because of a bad PSU. Easily one of the most important parts of a build is a good power supply.

Yes but they still use their excellent long long lasting capacitors and always same with warranties as all their products, to each his own though hope you find one you will like I'm going with G2 or P2 Versions soon 850W or so is about all I will need never been a SLI guy.

I may go a little higher because it will be for future of next MB, CPU, Mem. Most likely getting the Z170 classified board (may try sli it is ready for quad sli though but has the sheebang you need for everything else and ports too and Skylake cpu. By this time I'm sure some new skylakes will be released when I get around to those 3 lol

I have current antec also just this sorry for double it is a older 680W firehazard dust bunny lol. Power lacks for a 680W however was a old friends he sent me and has not stopped yet but I think it has deminished and could be the source of all my BSOD's going past 3.2ghz OC I bump that voltage a little on my 1st gen 45nm Q9550 E0 and goes unstable.

Rock solid PSU's and High Quality Japanese Capacitors can't beat them, best support ever had as well always use EVGA and Intel product only besides PnP devices.
