Hello all! As some of you know I usually play heavy (or sniper) on turbine. Sadly as much as I love heavy, I'm terrible as him. I really could use some tips on how to be a very skilled Heavy.

I really hope to be as good as HaloRacer and SteelBilly someday because both are a huge inspiration:blush:.

I want to join the server and people say"Ughh, Beluga is here to dominate meh" and they disconnect:lol:

Tips for any other class is welcome as well because.... well I'm pretty bad as every class. I would really appreciate it guys. So if you main heavy I would love if you could help meh out on these things: ;)

- How to keep your medic alive
- Staying alive without a medic
- How to get on an insane streak
-Capping
-etc.

Thanks guys <3

- How to keep your medic alive

Sandvich. Don't use on medic who only has slight damage, remember they do regenerate. Really good to have a sandvich ready to save for those situations where they have 30 health and are on fire!

Also, communicate with them. When you're standing on the edge of a corner, they should be using the full extent of their medi-gun to heal you while staying away from rocket blasts. It always amazes me how many medics I see blown up trying to heal me and yet they stand right next to me getting rekt by rockets/grenades.

- Staying alive without a medic

You just can't be as aggressive. Having a 450 health buff is awesome. Regular health goes away fast. Using Turbine as a main example... without a medic, I won't go into enemy tunnels without nearly full health. Know when to pull back and eat a sanvich. Getting surrounded by multiple enemies is tough with low health, so sometimes you need to prioritize.

- How to get on an insane streak

The best streaks I've had are with Steel, Derpy, and some dude named JTCS. With Steel and Derpy at least, it's because they know the tactics of Turbine really well. My best streak (71) was done by knocking out 2-3 at a time, maybe more if we had kritz. People think I'm crazy (maybe... lol), but I really don't ever jump into a fight where too much is going on.

-Capping

I don't usually play to cap as much. I mostly like to drop in, murder everyone, and leave. :biggrin_old: If there is a single sentry near the drop-in point from the vent in Turbine, you can destroy it without an uber (even without a medic) if you listen for where it is and shoot it as you drop in. You should kill it before you lose more than half health.

Other stuff:

Biggest tip I have is concerning spin-up time. I always prefer the stock minigun. If you come face to face with another heavy who's spun-up and you're not, game over usually. Doesn't mean you need to walk across the whole map spun-up, but before going around any corner, I will always have it ready. Steelbilly was the first other heavy on Turbine that I saw doing what I did, which is to sometimes shoot as you walk around a corner ("through the corner" if you will). I've battled against Steel many times now, and it's always amazing what happens when we meet each other at the same time. Our fates are often decided by who started firing less than a split second before the other.

I also use a Razer mouse that allows me to change sensitivity on the fly. I personally play with very low sensitivity as heavy (and in general). It's funny watching most heavies getting confused by a scout or demoknight running around them, unable to hit anything. I can track scouts very easily with my precise mouse settings, preventing over-corrections.

Finally, sometimes you're just gonna suck. I have bad days, or days where I'm honestly not that motivated to play hard. As a mostly-heavy guy, I like to play medic to see what it's like from the other side of the relationship.

Wow, thank you so much for this I owe ya a million, you are such a good pal!

Halo has some excellent advice / feedback here.

One thing I would add is that you can spin up while in the air without losing forward momentum during spinup. So when you are running forward and you know you want to fire, jump a split second before starting spin-up. I'll often do this when going around corners and land from the jump just as boolets are beginning to fly from the minigun. You give folks a little less time to hear the spin up and you land in their lap pretty often, and when you are firing into someone's face with a minigun, they generally find themselves in spawn a few seconds later. The exception to this is when you know there's a SG around the corner - jump into a SG and you will be pinned to a wall while the uber your medic popped runs out... i cri ever tim.

With heavy it is all about getting in close so you can dump the maximum amount of hate out of your weapon. Knowing the map and the choke points is key. On turbine, for example, the heavy tends to rule the vents because it is so easy to keep folks in max damage range. Running across mid, on the other hand, stinks - Remy/Rose/Mini/Lockhart/36/freshmeat/Mobilize will ruin your good time in a heartbeat with a well-placed headshot on your ginormous waddling body.

Getting across open spaces is tricky. I used to use the Gloves of Running Urgently and still do occasionally because they help you close the distance so quickly. Those mini crits you open yourself up to while wearing them must be managed properly though. Pick your route carefully - use cover as often as possible to break up the sight lines of snipers (crates in mid on turbine are good for this and the stairs to an extent).

I'm now using The Fists of Steel because you can absorb a 100% headshot from Remy/Rose/Mini/Lockhart/36/freshmeat/Mobilize and survive. 40% damage mitigation is a LOT of damage mitigation :) Being perma slow is a major drawback, but I have escaped the creek of dookie many times by switching to melee while wearing my Fists of Steelbilly when a situation goes sour <3

One thing I loved that Halo pointed out was to play as medic. Playing medic will absolutely make you a better heavy. When you are looking for places to hide as medic, it will stick in your mind when you are playing heavy. Trying to keep your medic where they have some cover is a fantastic way to get on a monster KS. Halo's note on communication is key, too. The best medics know to stay out of blast range while working the vents when possible - if you tailgate the heavy as medic, you will find out the hard way that your 150 HP is WAY less than his 450 overheal; splash damage from pills and rockets will ruin your good time :)

One last thing I like to do when I know a medic and I will be camping a spot is to do some preventive maintenance and throw a sandvich down before the guano gets into the fan blades. This works well with medics you know will 1) notice it is on the ground; 2) not pick it up when they are at 97% health. The other risk you run with a premeditated sandvich throw is that someone else might pick it up in the chaos – even the other team. I find it is worth the risk though; knowing I can keep JAWBREAKER singing not deprive the medic of a snack if they need it is usually credit to team ;) If you toss it where you know the medic will be hiding it is in an area that you are defending anyway...

This is a really good note, too. When you are playing like your keyboard is upside down I think the frustration is compounded as heavy. Nothing like wadling 1/2 a mile on Dustbowl to the front line @ .03 MPH and immediately being backstabbed by MB ~ 10 times. Keep your chin up and know that the good run is just around the corner. Finding a medic that will stick with you until you hit the good runs is tricky, but when you do, it is a brotherhood/sisterhood that will endure! FloatingAsh has stuck with me through thick and thin on many runs until we get into a spot where things are going well. Respect that when you see it and add that person to your friends list :)

Speaking of spies, this is tough as heavy, but try and learn where they hide/approach from on a given map. You will not see me leave our vent onto the battlements without firing a burst to the left to check for blood, for example. I usually shoot a burst down each hallway in the vents, just to the left and right after leaving the garage door into mid, and behind the corners on the little room on the battlements. When you are confident the threat in front is minimal, check your six often.

Wow thank you for the great feedback

Always check your back for spies. Actually don't. Please. Trying to backstab Steel and Halo is hard enough.

Hey, coming from a former heavy main, there is nothing to worry about. You have so much health. Literally nothing can kill you,

Nothing.

What about load out? I assume stock Minigun, Sandvich and the Gloves of Running Urgently?

Yup, thats my favorite loadout!

Mine as well, although Steel has a great point about the minicrits being a problem. A lot of my deaths can be attributed to having those minicrits giving me a big disadvantage. In a way they do help suitability too though, because sometimes NOPEing out a situation quickly with those gloves is the best option.

Something that's very important and usually overlooked because it doesn't have anything to do with a particular class -

Game sense is very, very important. Especially with heavy, when you don't have much else to rely on except BOOLETS, you need to learn what is a good situation and what isn't. You may have a medic with full uber, but that doesn't mean you can jump down from vents into intel when there's 2 sentries on opposite sides and 3 people + a good pyro. You'll get kited and you won't be able to do anything. You're not invincible, and with good strategy you can be overwhelmed. Always be aware of where the enemy is and where your team is.

My primary loadout is: Sandvich, Stock Mini, and Gloves of Steel.

Sometimes I still use the Gloves of Running Urgently.
Sometimes I switch to Natascha when the server is overrun with scouts.

I'm insulted that I wasn't mentioned.
I'm #1 in Fisty-cuffs.

Advice from you? Beluga said he wants to get better at heavy!

Fists of steel are commonly used in high level competition, though..matter for talk
