I was about to post this ..."I need help making my decision about what to upgrade my son's PC too" post.....then I downloaded the specs chart from Intel on their i5 and i7 CPU's and found out that the specs on every one of them for max RAM is Waaaay lower than what the motherboards are listing as supported (default too) RAM speeds!!!! WTH???

Example:
Intel i5-series CPU's are only listed for Max DDR3 1066/1333.....ummmm?

According to just about every mobo that I found for the i5's, they list DDR3 AND DDR4!!! I bought DDR4 for my i5 and overclocked, now it seems that I actually triple clocked the RAM on that PC and have been doing the same on the other PC's as well!! sigh, no wonder my son's PC is locking up and doing weird random shutdowns!!

I saw wondering if this was a mistake, so I called Intel yesterday, nope they told me that if are running those RAM speeds, you will void any warranty on the CPU!! I am just in a daze after spending all that money to find that the settings are all messed up and I dont know what has happened to the CPU's at this point! They are probably ok physically, just not running the best they could ....eh?

What specific motherboard and processor are you using? What RAM? This does not quite add up.

I have built several others for people using components of the same specs, as it seemed to work ok while in game, but the older ones now have crash and hang-up issues that I was blaming on just being old...

Here is your answer to your question rockin.
Im running an i5 2500k which the cpu only supports up to 1333 but if you have mobo that supports higher speeds it will override the cpu.
Ideally, you want to run cpu requirements but if it causing system hiccups its best to dial it down to spec sheet limits and see if performs better.

Are you using 1333 ram? Cause i have the same cpu but with 1600
ram.
