I hate to be "that guy" but...no DUH NPR. While it is on a larger scale, why do you suppose artillerymen and sailors aboard battle ships or ships with guns do not stand on deck to the side of the muzzle when the gun goes off? While it is a smaller detonation, it is the same kind of principle.
