Check This Out My power supply almost started a house fire

So this computer is about 2 years old with a new graphics card so I wouldn?t expect any problems from it but about a week ago I noticed the back (bottom) area of my PC was really hot. (This is around the power supply).

I just lived with it until yesterday my computer started spontaneously restarting itself. Today, my father and I decided to investigate and found out that we couldn?t get the power cable out of the port because it got so hot, it had melted and we had to rip it out.

The whole entire port and end of the power cable are completely destroyed, burnt, cracking, and extremely hot, like touch it for too long and you?ll get a bad burn hot.

I?m extremely lucky that it didn?t start a house fire, although I have a surge protector. So pretty much don?t expect to see me on the servers for a week or so until I can get this sorted out. (Or until I decide to download CS on my dads computer).

P.S. We have no clue how it got to this point. I have 6 fans and perfect ventilation this is probably irrelevant but my room is also always cold

That’s actually insane. Glad nothing too big came of it. As far as taking it somewhere, if you know enough about computers and replacing computer components, you should just do it yourself instead of the hassle with dealing with extra charges and such that you may get from other places.

Time to invest in a good quality power supply! You guys could probably replace it yourselves, so long as no other hardware was damaged. Power supplies are finicky, since a bad one can take out more than just your PSU.

Google/youtube could help you out a lot, and work with your dad on it.

I highly recommend the EVGA Supernova power supplies.

Haha I didn’t even notice the comments until now. But those comments just bring to light the many many possibilities of what went wrong and due to the fact my father and I have very limited technical expertise, there’s no other option to take it somewhere. Trying to DIY would only make it worse and take up a tremendous amount of time and effort.

And yes the first ‘restart’ did infact happen in Jailbreak, I was warden and was explaining race on Obama. I always wonder how bad that round went to crap.

Okay, if that’s the case, then I’d call around and see and analyze pricing. Because, it should be a fairly simple process if that is indeed the only component that had any kind of issues.

No. **** that. You're a human with a brain. This is an opportunity to learn. Replacing a power supply is one of the easiest things to do. You simply plug shit in where it goes..in detail.

Unless you like to let others conquer you..Then, bring it in to some other guy who will do your job for you.

Btw the surge protector wouldn't have stopped a fire. Your lucky that it also didn't short circuit anything that could've rendered your computer useless.
