Is the MK5 Supra a good car?

Is the new MK5 Supra a car deserving of it's name?!

So the MK5 Supra is a thing now, but it's not exactly what us JDM fans wanted. I will admit now that its a good car and shares a couple things in common with it's predecessors. It has a turbo i6, it's RWD, and is a sports car. It also has more horsepower than the stock MK4 Supra. Sure it's good that Toyota didn't absolutely butcher the Supra like Mitsubishi did with the Eclipse, but it's still not good enough in my opinion. The new Supra is anything but a Supra. The MK5 Supra has a BMW i6, which made a lot of Supra fans angry. I know that Toyota couldn't put a 2JZ in it, but I still don't like it. Another thing is that the MK5 Supra will only come in an 8 speed automatic, which is kind of ludicrous to me.

All in all, I think it's an okay car, but it still isn't what I expected. The Supra is mediocre in my opinion, because when I think of Supra, I think of breathtaking legend that is the 2JZ, with it's massive capability. I think of an amazing sports car that is a jack of trades. I think of a car that goes above and beyond. And in my opinion, the new Supra isn't that. It doesn't live up to it's name.

I did a bit more looking into the new A90 Supra, and I guess I am kind of jumping the gun with criticism. This car might be spectacular, even though it only has an 8 speed automatic transmission. I am going to have to see it perform.

I'm not a fan of the car at all, I really wish toyota would have went a different route and them opting for a bmw I6 was odd. Imagine they made a refined 2jz with todays tech and metallurgy! Or maybe a differen't route like nissan did with the Vr38 series replacing the Rb26! Now that doesn't mean the car won't perform and I'm sure the 8 speed auto trans has seemless shifts but I know us jdm fans are really getting the short end of the stick

R rps13 I completely agree with you. It would have been awesome if they could just build a 2JZ for the new Supra, but I don't think that is possible. The fact that it has a BMW engine, from the BMW Z4, disappoints me the most. The new Supra is basically a BWM Z4, except the Z4 has a manual transmission option!! Even more so, they basically cost the same! Which means you are better off just buying the Z4, which just blows my mind because the Supra is supposed to be this god like sports car filled with innovation and capability. The Supra should be in a league of it's own, not some copy paste of a damned BMW. But still, there is still potential within the new Supra, though it will not be nearly as good as the MK4 Supra.

Lots of sports cars now come with an automatic. The performance is there and with newer dual-clutch automatics, they handle like a dream and are optimal for tracking, etc. The people who buy them - rich people - want to sip their coffee on the way to work with their right hand, not shift their car. If you live in a busy city, driving a manual car sucks ass (I do it daily).

Since you're 16, not to scoff at things but, I don't think you've driven too many fast cars at this point in your life to quite get it. The current Z4 is an almost 400HP lightweight car. It's nothing to laugh at. If you've driven any of the current BMW's (335, etc), the twin turbo 3.5L's are extremely fast and can easily make a LOT more power. Toyota's current development is focused elsewhere, on economical cars. Their performance market is very, very small. So it makes sense not to invest millions into a single engine and platform for a very small customer base.

Supra has also been off the market for an extremely long time. Hard to dump money into a platform you don't know you'll get a return on. See, this is business. Maybe if the demand becomes clearer, they will make more changes.

Side note, would be nice to see someone make a manual that isn't a total trash gearbox. Seriously, there's very few actual good gearboxes out there right now.

+1 on the manual. i would love to see a good gearbox manual but no one seems to want to get steam behind the idea.

I wouldnt touch supra with a 10 foot pole. theres no end in sight (of the market silence).

Also, the 2JZ IS coming back.

I'll say this off the bat, I have no interest in German engineering. My opinion may be biased because of that. It's also true that I haven't driven many fast vehicles during my lifetime. I know it's going to be a good car, but I can't help but to dislike it. In my mind, it just seems so ludicrous. I know I'm being extremely unfair, and this next statement is going to be very broad, but if Toyota wasn't going to make what we expected, then they might as well have never even done it in the first place. I'm sorry Simon , but this kind of Supra isn't something I wanted to see happen, and I can see that a lot other JDM fans would agree with me. But I'll admit, no matter how you look at it, it's going to be a good sports car. I know the 2JZ isn't coming back. I know the Supra now will never be the Supra then. But I still dislike it.

I work at a dyno tuning shop, So I'm in this field of work and A lot of those auto transmissions fail when they are introduced to big power or any sort of real spirited driving. Those BMW I6 engines have severe oil burning issues, Injector problems up the ying yang and poor cylinder head design and their power bands are very small, they make great torque but they fall on their face top end.

I'd like to think my Impreza RS is pretty zippy lol. I haven't pushed it myself, but I got a ride from the previous owner, who pushed the car. Oh boy, I'll remember that day for a while. I know I am kind of jumping the gun, but I am already saving up money to do things with the my Impreza. One thing is that it won't happen soon, at all. It'll have to be after I graduate from high school and start making money from a job. Even then, I don't think I will be able to do it soon. I just think it would be nice to start working on my car. I'll keep it as it is until I blow a head gasket or something or just until the engine gives me lots of problems, because the NA SOHC EJ25 engine that is already in it is very good with fuel.

I did a bit of research just now, and my car is around 180Kg lighter than the new Supra despite my Impreza having an AWD drive train. My car is also lighter then the Z4. I wouldn't call these cars lightweight, but I guess that depends on perspective. In my opinion, a lightweight car is a car that weighs under 1360Kg.

I just wanna say that Subaru has the best sounding 4 bangers ever. The growl of an EJ engine is so beautiful! I could fall asleep to that growl!

Another thing we should do is compare newer iterations of the other popular JDM cars to the A90 Supra as well. It may not be fair, but I just want to know what you guys think

Man I own one of these. It makes like 150hp - you need to get into some actual fast cars one day dude, then you'll realize it . You'll learn once you've experienced more and get older.

The EJ25 is dreadful on fuel overall lol. Don't believe the numbers. Seriously. I daily one.

Do not modify the engine one bit. Absolute waste of money for 0 gains. Concentrate on suspension if you want to modify anything, and then learn to push a low hp car, before you get into something faster.

I also forgot you own an Impreza RS as well lmao. Suspension is something I do want to do with the car as well. This talk is nothing more than ambition, and something I would like to do if possible. I just can't help but want to have a cool, fast, racing car like in the videos on YouTube that I see. I know I sound like a fanboy, but I just look up to these tuners and am just inspired to make my car into something amazing.
