Tech Help Power supply issue

So I recently noticed that the power supply fan keeps running when the rest of the system is off in my moms desktop. I originally thought that the system was still running when I heard the fan running (sometimes my mom leaves the desktop on by accident). However, I recently looked and noticed no power. I decided to turn the switch to kill all power, which did cause the fan to stop moving. However, when I turned the switch back to the 'on' position, the fan went right back to running again. Mind you that ive never experienced this before.

I am sure that we can continue to use the power supply for maybe another day or so, but would you guys recommend that I replace the power supply altogether? I think weve had it for over 3 years now (this is just a guess). Mind you that I have done some research on Google and cannot seem to find another issue similar to mine.

Check if all the cables to and from the PSU are plugged in properly. What power supply is it?

If possible, try the power supply with another motherboard. It might be a motherboard issue or you might have to swap the PSU.

this could just be extra energy. kinda like how when you turn your PC off, even with a kill switch, the motherboard could retain energy.

fans run when heat rises..i guess the real question is..does it happen 24/7 no matter the environment? you said you had the PSU for 3 years, did it just start happening recently?

it could be that your PSU is faulty, overheating, etc. but you would see more issues i think then the PSU fans running nonstop. surging, PC not running 100%, etc.

sure, the common advice is to replace it, anyone can do that. it's more fun to figure out a solution or the reason behind the fans running constantly though. more knowledge, more power, more dominance!

Ric's got a great point. It would be nice to test with a different PSU first and narrow it down - see if the mobo is commanding the PSU on, or if it's doing it's own thing.

What PSU model is it? Some of them have an 'aftercool' setting where they will stay on until they are cooled to a certain temperature/stay on for an exta x amount of minutes to cool them down.
