Bad Company 2 I bought myself a honkin' new system, but.....

...I still get lag if I play at high settings. Especially during reloads or kills. I haven't bought a new system in years, and I bought hoping this should be relevant for a while.

Ryzen 5 3600x
16 Gb ram
RTX 2070 Super

Am I missing something when it comes to BFBC2 though?

I'm still using a 27" Acer 1080 monitor 1920x1080. I didn't want to drop another 300 bucks quite yet. heh.

I know some games can stutter if the hard drive itself cant keep up. Not sure if bfbc2 is one of those games.

RDK makes a good point - what are you using for storage? If it's just a regular conventional spinning hard drive, that would be your biggest bottleneck in the system.

Assuming you have a brand new motherboard, it most likely has room for an m.2 SSD - if you let us know the model, we can check into it. m2. SSD's run from 2.5-3.5GB/s for reading speeds - your regular spinning drive will top out around 120MB/s.

Agreed, although I highly recommend using an SSD for gaming, and m.2 specifically as a boot drive, to prevent unnecessary loads and clutter.

Edit: Also m.2s tend to be pricey, which if you aren't ready for a full commit of buckaroos, getting a smaller m.2 and a larger ext. SSD is a great way to go!

The price point between a regular SSD and an m.2 is getting quite close - about a $50 difference for the same amount of space now. If you have room for two... go nuts.

But yes, SSD's are a must and with the great pricing these days, it's very easy to get a nice M.2 for the boot drive, and run your games off a 2.5" SSD.

hello tikun, you have a very good computer friend, what I think is that, battlefield bad company is badly optimized, when I started playing bad company, I played with a phenom ll 965, then switch to an amd FX 8370 and an HD 7970 and I did not notice much change, all this with windows 7. My motherboard does not support Windows 10, sending blue screens, so I have my windows 7. best regards

I have the 1Tb version of OneDrive...which I consciously started for the purpose....which was syncing my entire system all that time. Sigh. It didn't make a difference before because it was never running constantly like that. Probably explains the low upload bandwidth as well.

So, thanks VERY much for the concern and the brain power.

In response to one of the questions....I have a 500G Nvme SSD. And also in case you're wondering, it's like my entire entertainment budget for the next two years, and my incentive to finally quite the smokes, though I'm already down to 2 packs a week...at $17CAN they still add up pretty quick.

...I'm not as embarrassed as I was. I mean, forgetting that I was running OneDrive full tilt was a noob error, but ultimately it wasn't the problem.

It turns out that there's a known and long-lived bug in this series of video card drivers. It returns the error: "Event ID 14 from source nvlddmkm", to which I've found only a lot of bitching and very few solutions....all of which I've tried. NVidia doesn't seem to have made a move on it pretty much since day one since the error looks like it's existed for about 10 years.

The result is that I can play for maybe 5-10 minutes at a time, sometimes a little longer, and then the game crashes completely. I even get a little twitch about 10 seconds before I lock up so I know the fun's coming to an end. It takes about 20 seconds for the crash to freeze my character, and I think I still exist in the game for about 20-30 seconds after that...audio tells me I'm moving and shooting.

It truly sucks, because I still wanted to play until the game died out, not stop because of a technical issue.
 
The only other thing I can think of is Directx . Make sure this is not set to auto and is set to Direct x 9 first, then you can try 10 and 11 to see if they are stable . Many of the problems you listed could be caused by this. Hope this helps. Go to c:\users\[username]\documents\BFBC2 settings, Dxversion

I should have thought of that! I'm sorta glad I didn't though. I brought the system in Monday night for them to look at, and when I called the next afternoon their customer service guy told me the tech couldn't reproduce any of the errors...not even in battlefield. It was a "Pardon me?" moment. The only difference between the unit being in the shop and at my place was the keyboard, mouse, and monitor. I called BS, politely, and told him I was coming in for a refund...which I did.

They called me back yesterday all apologetic and rebuilt the system in a new box with new components (I checked, heh) and the RX5700 video card instead of the 2070S. I understand that there might be a small performance penalty, but it'll probably be too small for me to notice. Theoretically i shouldn't run into any more NVidia errors...right? heh

It was disappointing, but with any luck all will be well. I'm going to set it up after I eat. The pic is of Event viewer's errors a few days after I got it home.

I hope they gave you the price difference ($350 vs $500) between those two cards because that is more then a bit in GPU performance drop... Unless you mean the 5700XT which is about on par with the 2070super but about a $100 cheaper.

5700 is at the 2060super range of performance.
