Question...

Ok, as some of you may know I want to build myself a newer computer. I don't want to buy everything at once because some of my stuff will still be compatible with the new things until I have enough money to make a total overhaul on the thing. I want to buy THIS motherboard, and THIS CPU to start out with my newer computer. The only thing Im worried about is my power supply. I would like to JUST buy the motherboard and CPU to start off with because the newer PSU I want it another $270. I have a 600w PSU right now. Its working just fine and I want to use it a bit longer. The CPU I want needs an 8-pin CPU connector and my PSU has two 4pin CPU connectors and I was wondering if they will plug in right next to each other and work like an 8pin?

Another question I've always wanted answered as well is: I have an 8800GTS right now and like I was saying, all I want to start off with is that mobo and that cpu. That mobo has two PCI express 16 2.0 slots and my card now is PCI express 16. Will the card I have now work with that mobo? I've done some research and I'm almost 100% it will but would still like to know.

More than likely not due the small lip around the otter edge of the 4 pin atx power connector, so they couldnt be placed close enough together to accommodate the 8pin slot.

There are also 2x 4pin 12v molex connectors to 1 8pin male ATX adapters out there, but the 1st type above is better since its coming off the 12v Rail intended for CPU power

After reading what you said it made me think. So I just shutdown my puter and unplugged the CPU connector to look. Both of the 4pin connectors have this flat side on them so they can be put together as an 8pin! I put them together and it was perfect. Does anyone have anything to add to this and my other question about PCI express 16 2.0?

Yes it will work PCI-Express 2.0 is backwards compatible w/ 1.0 cards you just wont get the 2.0 bandwidth (which many benchmarks have concluded has little performance increase right now). Still trying to get the max bandwidth out of the 1st generation x16 slots lol.

I would still get the adapter for the 4 pin to 8 pin. It seems like you are taking a risk putting two separate wires into one connector. You might cross polarities, or short the circuit.

Ok first of all the pins are set up with positive and negative terminals KEYED to work in a specific slot in the mobo!! I seems they would fit in the new mobo and from what Wally said I believe he will be perfectly fine. I think those two pins were meant to work to gether in a 8 pin mobo slot.

Like I said, both sides of each 4pin are flat and even the clips on each one line up into one pin when you put the 2 together. all 8 pines are evenly spaced out and its just perfect. I think they made it to you could use it as 2 4pins or 1 8pin like Q said.
