Hey there fellow DoDers,

Was wondering if any of you guys participates in any World War Two Reenactment, and if so, what units/organizations you belong to? I've been watching the CHG (California Historical Group) from afar and thinking of joining a unit, but every time I do my hair gets dyed a wacky color haha. Not very historically accurate, I'd say.

erm, yeah. To what I imagine the majority of people reading this post would think: Yes, pretty nerdy. But pretty cool too!

Not at all, I think it would be pretty fun and educational. I always thought that kind of war would be among the scariest to fight. Probably second only to the Braveheart era type of fighting.
 
i would like to join such a group, but in europe (especially germany) there is nothing like this. there are few people who collect uniforms and military stuff but no real historical group. i do belong to a few members who run a own forum and online encyclopedia with a lot of stuff regarding the Wehrmacht. if anyone does understand german...http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de the forum link ist http://www.forum-der-wehrmacht.de.
 
well i can see how it would be a sore subject in Germany not to re-enact any of this. But if ever there is a way to learn from past mistakes, education is the key. I think re-enactments are very educational, especially for those involved.
 
Well, this thread I created has the additional effect of bringing interest into the field of reenactment!

As such, I can share some resources...

http://www.chgww2.com/ This is the California Historical Group. Since it's local for me I generally look here first. I've found about three Allied and two Axis units in my area.

If/when I do it, I'm thinking I'll go Allied.. for two reasons:

1. I most likely will be getting a Garand rifle (I have a mauser but it's Turk).

2. I already have two GI helmets. I've not done it yet but I want to paint medic crosses on one. They make for good conversation and costume additions.

And another I bought for half that price in Australia. Apparently there's a rather large WW2 Reenactment community there.

Probably the best site I've found for odds and ends in collecting uniform parts (mostly reproduction, some originals) can be found here... http://www.atthefront.com/ (I think) I got an M1936 satchel there.

Anyway, hope those spark some interest, and see you guys on the servers!
 
.......if there was one in kitchener I would join. You know what i think if it was back in the worldwars and I was 18 ( 15-16) I would join but know really the wars to me are stupid like back then like you fought for your life now its just do you get hit by a nuclear bomb or not.
 
I was looking for this site earlier, when I posted links. It's in my opinion the most compelling example of how reenacting appeals to me. A member of a California group that reenacts the US 2nd Armored Division travels to France with a rather large group of other reenactors from all over America who portray the same unit and retraces the steps from Omaha Beach through the Bocage and several small villages, through the Bocage toward Belgium. They rode in uniform in the same types of vehicles, and did everything the real 2nd did but fight and die.
