Aesthetics

"Big" Betty is my Frankenstein-esque gaming rig that I built a few months ago. The case is somewhat older than the rest of the components inside of it, and I picked it up at an auction where I live. I bought the case and the old junk inside of it (as well as a CRT monitor and a keyboard 'n mouse) for $10. It was originally whiteish, but a coat of paint quickly took care of that. I also cut a hole in the side of the case, following existing design lines and placing some plexi I found at Atwoods over the hole.

p_00392.jpg

I painted the front a two-tone orange/black color scheme, and painted the buttons and trim pieces a metal flake gloss black. It looks much better in person, these pictures were taken with my cell phone. I also cut a hole in the bottom of the front panel and placed a mesh over it for better airflow.

p_00393.jpg

On the inside, Betty is cooled by six (6) 80mm case fans; four in the front and two in the back. Cooling the CPU is a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, with the excess cable attached around the circumference of the fan grill. Also inside is a set of dual UV cold cathodes, though the one on top isn't nearly as bright.

cables-1.jpg

Call me OCD, but I spent two hours doing the cable management to make them seem more... graceful. Most of them start from the PSU in a large cluster, then begin branching from the main cluster as they arrive at their destinations. I think I used several dozen 4" zip ties doing cable management alone. The rest of the cables from the PSU, as well as the cables for the front fans, are hidden between the other side panel and the sheet metal where the motherboard mounts.

Hardware

p_00396.jpg

Under the hood, Betty is packing a Core 2 Duo E7200. This processor is a demon, because it is at a stable overclock at 3.6 GHz on air, with much thanks to the Freezer 7 Pro. The motherboard is the GIGABYTE GA-EP43-DS3L, which has an extremely wonderful BIOS with tons of overclocking tools and other misc. good stuff. As far as RAM goes, Betty radiates memory with 3 GB of Wintec AMPX DDR 2 800MHz (PC2 6400). The hard drive is a Seagate Barracuda 500 GB 7200 RPM unit.

The single most expensive component on my rig is the ASUS Radeon HD4850 (slim edition). It is an extremely powerful card, and for reference it plays Crysis on all Very High settings smoothly, with no AA. This card is a must have for anyone who wants a killer card on a not-so-killer budget.

All of the above is powered by a Corsair CMPSU-550VX 550W power supply, which is also a must have for anyone who wants a quality PSU with PLENTY of connectors.

For my personal pleasure, Betty's window is a Acer 22" 5ms widescreen monitor. Also for my personal pleasure (and TV viewing convenience), I have a Logitech wireless slim keyboard and a S 510 wireless mouse. Handy for me, the keyboard and mouse have a really good sensor range. I can control the computer from across the room. The speakers are a cheap pair with a subwoofer I got from Radio Shack a couple years ago. My web cam (tucked underneath the shelf just beside the white hard drive) is actually a Panasonic GS85 camcorder. It makes a really awesome web cam.

Software

On the software end of things, Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit is installed as the only operating system. I also have Adobe Master Collection CS3, which includes the Production applications. The only other major set of Software I have is the Microsoft Office Enterprise edition, which is just above Home & Student I believe. At least mine is. I have much more software (I collect software, even little things like the Java installer), but I'd rather not list them at the moment.

In addition, I have about 120 GB of ripped movies, some in HD.

yeah ive worked pretty hard to get this computer up and running, cost me lots of cash.

yeah i was risking it with the NIC card because i had heard mixed reviews about it. I had pings of about 80-95 before i got the card and now ive got about 40-50 so a good buy for my computer.

ill send another pic or two once i get my mako speakers in.;)
