Well I have an old computer that was originally made for windows 98, but runs XP fine. Anyways I realized since its always just sitting ther that I should put some use to it. I couldn't think of anything but then I read something from Digg about how to put an old comp to work. All of it seemed good, but not useful or practical except maybe a game server. Here are some questions:

I don't really know anything about the names of admin commands to change things such as re-spawn time and other things. What should I know?
What map is missed?
Should I download some 3rd party mod for the dedicated server?
May I be allowed to put the eGO name on it?
If so, how do I make other eGs and eGOs admins/moderators?
Do I need a source engine game/TF2 to run this server?
I have Comcast which offers up to like 12 Mbps. Do you think the old computers Pentium III will be able to handle the server and people connected to it?
Any other pointers?
Etc etc.

It will be connected to the internet once I buy a switch.
Help would be greatly appreciated.

I think someone brought this up once before wanting to run a server and put the eGO name on it, I think it goes against some law or copyright thing for the clan. You need to ask one of the council members about that.

1. You should add some respawn time, if you are going to make a Goldrush server (impossible to defeat the defensive team if it is a quick respond), ask the admins to help you out on the server.
2. Um, usually I rather go for the good old maps (ctf fort 2, and ctf turbine, etc) or get a popular mod map.
3. I don't think so, I dunno about this... But, you can actually download TF2 dedicated server in the tools section.
4. Never thought of this, soooo Idk.
5. I rather go for 100mb servers, cause loads of people will lag, cause the game is world-wide.

Also ASK THE COUNCIL FIRST BEFORE SETTING UP A SERVER WITH EDGEGAMER'S TAG ON IT!!! (Remember copyright!).

Really, its not a good idea if you don't have a server box.

1) Be prepared for a spike in your energy bills. It has to be run 24/7, which uses a lot of energy.
2) You will need to add cooling, as being on for such a long time will make it overheat eventually.
3) Upgrade networking. RAM, processor, and video cards don't matter as much as a good connection, as you'll have up to 32 people on your server, receiving and sending information.

If you really, really want to run a dedicated server, then you'll have to bring it up with the council, and then you'll have to have Artimus or Dominion or one of other techies help set it up.
When you set up a dedicated server, its not as simple as checking a box that says "these people have admin, and these people don't"

I can tell you that you will not be allowed to call it an eGO server. They are pretty strict about stuff like that since it took a lot of work to get eGO trademarked. They only allow eGO servers that they are running/renting (whichever it is that they do, I forget.)

Just make the old computer a server of your own so you can use it to store and access from remote ^^

And with that note, I am going to go ahead and lock this thread. If you are serious about putting up a server with the Edge Gamers name on it, you will need to speak with a council member.
