I confess I don't understand HLStatsX very well, in particular how folks can rank in the top 100 with miserable KD ratios, and how to get that squiggy blue line (skill) to go up, mine's flatlined since I started playin'.

Yet finally after a few months of hard work and doing my best to survive brawls (and pulling a lot of sneaky ambushes) . . . I got my KD ratio to 1.00 :).

Naturally I'd like an even better one, but for me this was an accomplishment.

By default I believe it is ranked by points, so even with a bad K/D ratio, if you have tons of kills and what not you can still have a high rank.

Congrats

I never understood how balzac was so high on the list though :P

people who play mostly engineer or medic rank up very easily because engineers usually have super high k/d ratios and medics get assists which give 5 points compared to 2 points for kills for everybody else who has a high rank.

I hope I explained that well.:p

Well, I find it hard to beleive some of the top guys have such hi scores but their play time is way down there. I saw 1 guy in the top 25 with less than 5 days playing time and he plays mostly demo.

actually, medic assists give 4 points, not 2. I find this helps when I want to go battle medic; all my assists are worth 4 points, even if I'm not healing anyone :D

Go engi and start playing aggressively. Every level one sentry gives 5 points when it's completly build, upgrading doesn't give you any points. I'm not sure how many points teleporters and dispensers give ya, but it's enough to get into the top 100 easily.
Offense/Aggressive/Support/howeveryouwanttocallitengi > your defense engi :p

2 Points for Dispensers, and both Teleporter ends.

A good way to rack up the points is to play Annoying Engie ( http://www.edgegamers.org/forums/showpost.php?p=498845&postcount=17 ). As you get 5 points for every sentry, and the other guy doesn't take any of your points AWAY for killing your sentry, building a few Level 1 Sentries and abandoning them work really good.

However, if your sentry kills somebody you will NOT get any benefiet to your kill-to-death ratio. I play Forward Battle Engie with a minor in Annoying Engie, and my KPD ratio sucked for so long because Sentry Kills give you points but don't effect your KTD ratio ( http://ego.hlstatsx.com/?mode=playerinfo&player=268954 ). The stats (other than the total points) don't reflect all the people that have met a grisly fate meeting up with Cindy the Sentry Gun. You only effect KPD by actively shooting or wrenching people yourself.

The line to notice, however, is "Built object: Sentry Gun". 1/10 of my total points right there.

Pretty much, when you first start off, 1000 points in hl, kill as many other people as you can with more points, the higher the better. and when you get around mine or Balzacs points, try to die as little as possible. Cause now that new 1000 point person is hunting ya. And they get 25 points everytime they kill you with some random shot.

To sum it up, killing is good, killing people with high points, is better. :D Unless you kill me, cause then I'll hunt to till you leave the server, lol. jk.

Nice. :) Trying to get my K/D ratio above 2.0, and it's almost there..

Yeah, I was aware that killin' high-point peoples is the goal, and avoiding getting killed by noobs (which makes crits annoying).

I started out playing exclusively Medic, and (I think) my rank was the highest I'd ever seen, somewhere around 1300-1400. I got tired of Medic, though. Same with Engineer. I always play engie aggressively (it's boring otherwise), trying to build on enemy territory.

My favorites are Pyro or especially Heavy. I had to camp a lot, particularly with the Heavy, as I was often without a Medic.

Bottom line, I'm not going to go for high rank if it kills my fun, and going back to Medic or playing Engie exclusively would do that. Working on improving my KD ratio with a Pyro or Heavy is fun for me, probably the two worst classes as far as longevity goes (behind the Spy, of course).

The one thing that bothers me is that squiggly blue "skill" line that refuses to go up, I think my skill has increased no matter what it says

I didn't mean to be confusing, but I wrote it late at night. What was confusing?

I was basically trying to say that playing a forward Engineer, and playing Annoying Level 1 Sentries that are swatted at like flies, and letting them die to place new sentries will rack up points, 5 points per sentry.

Also, kills by your sentry gun give you points, but do not affect your Kill to Death ratio. Only kills made personally count toward that.
