DVI vs VGA

I just bought a new 22" LCD monitor and i want to know if it is possible to run it as a Digital feed to my computer. Right now i can only get it to run as Analog. The monitor is DVI-D and my two video cards (Nvidia 8800 GT OC) are DVI-I and VGA capable. I have both VGA and DVI cables and adapters too. I really dont get the DVI-D and DVI-I differences. So at the moment its running as Analog. So if anyone knows how to make it Digital please help. thank you.

"DVI-I" stands for "DVI-Integrated" and supports both digital and analog transfers, so it works with both digital and analog Visual Display Unit. "DVI-D" stands for "DVI-Digital" and supports digital transfers only. (Link)​

Hmmm. Something's not adding up... what kind of plug does your monitor have, or what's the exact model number?

you should be able to use the dvi from your card to your monitor.
dvi always is > than vga. always.

Hmmm. Something's not adding up... what kind of plug does your monitor have, or what's the exact model number?

i have a samsung syncmaster t220. it has both DVI and VGA

Pretty much all monitors will accept either a DVI-D or DVI-I cable. And just about every video card I have ever seen that uses DVI is DVI-I by default, if only for compatibilities sake.

Do you have both the VGA and DVI cables connected to the monitor? If so, disconnect the VGA cable. It's useless and is probably what is causing the monitor to run in Analog.

If are only using the VGA cable, it will never run is Digital. You need to unplug it and exclusively use the DVI cable.

If you can run DVI, I highly suggest that you do. Aside from simplicities sake, you get better picture quality and response time from your monitor. The primary reason for improved picture quality is the DVI has significantly more available bandwidth than VGA; so it is able to send a more detailed picture. The other reason is that during the digital-analog-digital conversion process quite a bit a fidelity is lost resulting in a (comparatively) poor picture.

thank you, that did it. i just realize i was using the VGA connection with a DVI adapter (LOL). stupid me. So when i connected the DVI cable from my monitor to my VidCard and then my monitor recognized that it was digital, but my Computer wasnt recognizing it as Digital. So i ended up taking out my video cards and putting them back in for a hard reboot and that finally worked. Im loving the DVI connection, no more stupid line moving up the screen.
