hey everybody ive got 2 questions about vista. i dont really know to much about computer stuff so i was wondering if you guys could help me here. ok first question is whats the difference between the 64 bit and 32 bit versions of vista? and my second question is will my motherboard work with the 64 bit version? my friend was asking if i checked if my motherboard would support it so i sent him a link to my motherboard and he didnt know forsure. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128050 thats a link to it. it would be nice if somone would tell me if it can support it . thanks

The 64-bit versions of Windows can utilize more memory than 32-bit versions of Windows. This helps minimize the time spent swapping processes in and out of memory by storing more of those processes in Random access memory (RAM) rather than on the hard disk. This, in turn, can increase overall program performance.

to further elaborate:
32bit can only use up to about 2.5 gb of RAM, while 64bit can go up to something like 128 terabytes of RAM, thats 128,000 gb of RAM. most super computers don't use that much. If you use an 64bit os you have no limit to the ram, except for what your motherboard can handle.
I would recommend 64bit, as it leaves space for improvement in the future.

Yeah, but you better make sure the CPU supports 64bit. I'm pretty sure all the new ones do, but that's a surprise you don't want to happen.

That board will definitely support Vista X64


However, a higher RAM address capability is only one reason to go for X64. The primary reason is that the OS is able to use the second pipeline on a 64-bit processor that goes unused on a 32-bit OS. This does not translate into double performance, in reality you may see anywhere from a 5 to a 25 percent increase in application performance. Only programs that exclusively use the ALU on your processor will see anything close to a 100 percent performance boost.

32-bit Vista and XP can actually use up to 128 GB of RAM, but only 3GB will be visible on the API (application layer: what the programs you use run on) The OS is able to the other RAM as well as Virtual OSes you may have lying around.

There is a downside to X64 though. Not all hardware available has driver support for X64. So before you make the switch you need to verify that all of your hardware has 64-bit drivers available for use.

Its so confusing all the time something wont work, and Vista sucks for gaming. To many things you have to fix before you can even play. but Yeah that motherboard looks like it would work with either 64, or 32.

not true.. vista 64 bit is the best OS you can have for gaming today (considering you run it through vlite first and get rid of the unneccessary crap..)

There are customized versions of vista 64 bit on the internet that run amazingly well, all you need to do is purchase a vista 64 bit key and your golden.

I have to download a version of vista 64 because microsoft screwed me over and sent me a replacement "repair disk" when i ordered a replacement "install disc". Apparantly they dont send replacement install discs..

Few things to keep in mind before jumping on vista 64bit

Vista 64bit is going to be a little less stable then your xp32bit. And also most applications today are not 64bit native. So while 64bit apps do run faster, some of your 32bit apps may run slightly slower as windows will emulate a 32bit enviorment for them.

right now in my oppinion there are not alot of reason to go 64bit unless you have 4gig or more of ram. You will notice in task manager alot of the apps have a *32 next to them. This indicates that it is a 32bit app and not taking advantage of the 64bit percs. I am looking forward to Windows 7 to hopefully address some of the stability and program compatibilitie issues that I deal with in Vista.
