Need some help on sound card

Honestly, with that price range I wouldn't recommend getting a sound card at all. It's doubtful that it will sound any better than you onboard sound. If you get about $75 I'd recommend a Creative Audigy 2 ZS. Still an awesome card after all these years.

What you got against Creative. My X-fi Elite Pro is easily one of the best SCs available for PC. Just about the only thing better than the X-fi is the Azunetech Prelude... and it still uses an X-fi processor.
 
I suggest you collect about $120 and buy yourself a Razer Barracuda AC-1. It blasts the hell out of other sound cards.
 
If we are throwing out recommendations ill go ahead and recommend the Asus Xonar cards. $80 for the D1, or the D1x (PCI, vs PCIe). Tons of nice features (including full dolby tech, as well as dolby headphone) and as far as i can tell the sound quality is quite good.

As others have said, if you only have $40, you may want to skip it and just continue using onboard sound.
 
I have that sound card in my rig.had it for about 7 months now...sound is great
and blows away my 7.1 onboard,i hear everything in game....
 
I have the very card Angeal wants and ya know what? Don't bother. I took it out. It caused more issues than it solved. I'm trying to remember what game was completely messed up with it, but it escapes me right now. Also, I think some of the EAX stuff was completely messed up and not true in some games. Damn, I just can't remember exactly. It might have been issues with when I first tried running Vista (which I also abandoned and jumped back to XP). On board is fine for me. I play games though headphones anyway. Unless you've got a full surround going and blast it, I don't really see the need for sound cards anymore.

Not a big fan of the x-fi...at all. I would suggest an M-Audio 2496 over the Prelude ;)
 
i got a 30$ sound card cause i got a 5.1 headset but that broke so im sending back for the 5.1 thats usb SURE i got all 5.1 to work and i can use my mic and the sound is good BUT i can only use my mic on vent and i have to close almost every thing like others are saying just wait a while for a newer card dont spend anything less then 60$ for a soundcard
 
sound cards= non useful unless u like music and wathcing movies with a nice 7.1 surround sytem
 
its also great for gaming, i have a onboard card, and it sounds amazing. mine is either a 5.1 or 7.1, i dont really recall, but i can change it if i want :p

and for gaming, music and movies, i have great sound. onboard cards are not that bad really, depending which ones you have XD
 
Like gaming,
Watching videos,
Music big time i have two destop speakers and a set of head phones
Right now i got a on board Realtek so i was like this be perfect for me :)
