Whelp..according to people who know more about computers than I, my processor is dying. Considering this computer is around 7 year old, updating it is just not worth the money since the video card would still be much too old for newer games..Irkingly, I can't afford either the processor nor a new computer so if I suddenly disappear, you all will know that it's just my computer going to the great bianary in the sky. ;)

I've been trying to figure ways to raise the approx $1,000 I need for a pretty good computer but since I can't draw or such, selling art is out. Hey, if peoples have any ideas, I am all ears. The servers are too much fun to not play on for any length of time! :)
 
Sorry to hear of your troubles. Not sure how old you are but a job is your best bet to raise that kind of money. If your not old enough to get a job try asking your parents or neighbors for work that you can do to raise money.
 
Realistically you can build a 'decent' machine for under 800$...
 
Yea Deja is right ...Im only 13 but if your go to sites like....uhh craiglist or discont.com(I ono about discount.com) but there are alot of sites that you can get good stuff for cheap.If u dont like to buy pc stuff online then go to a frys.
 
I do have a job..3-9 hours a week, $8.00 an hour >.> My folks refuse to get me a new one, too. Bleh. Yeah, I was pointed to a good Dell for under $900 after the rebate. Told my folks it would be a birthday present but nope. Was really pushing for it so I would have enough power to FRAPS games and make videos. XP
 
Yeah you can get decent computers for real cheap nowadays. I just setup my dad's new office with four computers and they cost about 600-700 a piece, running Dual-Cores and decent RAM, etc. Video Cards are obviously a bit more expensive. What kind of processor is it that's dying? And is it replaceable? If it's a 7 year old machine a processor for it would probably cost 1.00 dollar on eBay or something. I have a few old processor's lying around in my office from various old machines that have been "recycled."
 
If you really want to get the bang for your buck then building is the way to go. now you said you arent proficient in computers, but computers are getting easier and easier to build, and there are plenty of tutorials online such as on the blog lifehacker ( http://lifehacker.com/5151369/the-first+timers-guide-to-building-a-computer-from-scratch ) and there are some good parts sites like new egg and tiger direct (they also have weekly/daily deals on computers and parts all the time.

If you're willing to build it yourself (which is actually not as difficult as it sounds) you can get a decent machine well under 1000 dollars. I can help you with any problems you might have. As far as raising the money, if you're old enough to hold down a small part-time job that's the best way, personally I do PC repair but that's just me.

EDIT: just laid out some parts, price comes in at just under 700 dollars. just to give you some ideas here's what I picked out, it's a good combo of parts.

AMD Phenom 9650 Quad core @2.3GHz processor
Asus M3A78 motherboard
DiabloTek 650-watt power supply
Galaxy GeForce 9600 GT
4GB Corsair dual-channel RAM
Western Digital Caviar 400GB HDD
DVD-RW drive
Cooler Master Centurion Mid-Tower case

regardless of what kind of computer you get you'll want to salvage as many peripherals as you can. stuff like monitor, keyboard, speakers, mouse, even sound card can be transplanted to your new comp. if it's a possibility you should do it.

yeah i feel your pain i have to share a computer with my dad since my computer was running to hot the video card melted to the motherboard

It's an Intel Pentium 4 Processor. The video card (which I said is old) is a Radeon 9600. Takes me 2-3 minutes just to load TF2's main screen and during the course of a game, I get upwards of 3-second screen pause recently. Also, it has been taking me 5 minutes to shut down. I have run various scans and even cleaned up disc space; nothing is helping. Hence why we think the processor is dying. I figure a rig this old should be replaced instead of upgraded. Tried to auction my Magic cards towards this end, too. Not like I play anymore. :)

Trying to figure out if I can do an event or something to raise cash but none of them make sense. I have few talents outside of gaming and even then, I am mediocre and have break-even skills..except with my TF2 Sentries. (6 kills in 3 seconds! Whoo!)
 
Get a HP pavilion, mine is 1000 dollars and i can run everything plus record (Desktop). I rigged my card and stuff, so right now its worth about 1600 dollars. Been with it for 3 years.

You are really helping the guy out right now...

For jobs (Because you are underaged for working, companies have the right to choose what they pay you, however most companies will pay you minimal wage, so get used to it-if I am right min wage is 7.50 right now):
I remember being a buss boy for a restaurant- job wasn't great but hey, learned that it is hard to make huge sums of money.
If you are into electronics try local tech store- the only problem you might run in is your age.
My first job was in a carnival (was around your age), where I was helping them prepare and monitor it. So look for district events-most of the time they will look for people to help.

Not really helpful but when you reach 15-16 is where you get and find a much easier a stable job.

Rofl. I am 24. The job market is just..bleh..here. I have had this job for 4 years, at these cruddy hours, because there is nothing else and, well, even 3 hours is better than 0.
 
Dude, there are so many jobs out there to pick up, even if it's just working an event. I pick up a few street fest jobs every summer just for quick and easy money for sitting around at something I'd go to anyway. Look on your local craigs list. Have you ever worked in a bar or restaurant? You could easily go to any corporate restaurant and pick up a few shifts a week. Those places love to hire people with no experience so they can train them to wait tables how they want you to wait tables and they are always hiring. Two shifts a week and you could have a hot new PC in a month. Sure money is better at nicer restaurants but I worked at corporate restaurants all through college and it was very easy money. If you have a car, delivering pizza is a very easy job to make money. Honestly, just try and get on at a restaurant to wait tables. It can be hard, but if you just smile and are nice to people it's really not that bad. I actually loved working in restaurants and I'm thinking about going back to it at age 33.

Bahhh my fault, read sushi's post and my mind somehow assumed that you are 13, right now what I am noticing that most people who are just too lazy to search for a fun job are all working at Jewel Osco (never realized but there like around 3 of them around me).
I worked at Radio Shack, was a fun job and they kept me around probably because I am somehow full of tech knowlege.
Computer wise you need no more than $700-750 to build a computer to max tf2, which is 100 hours of working, so about 16 days(6 hours ave)? Which is very possible.
For me the hardest part was actually going around looking for a job. Can't really help you much, but good luck.

yeah the rig I posted earlier in this thread could run TF2 pretty well with a quad core and a 9600 GT I'd think, TF2 isn't very tough on the hardware. if you were going for say, CoD5 you'd need a good bit more horsepower.

as far as getting the money, do assorted things for people you know if you can't get a normal job. the money will come in more slowly, sure, but I made some pretty good money doing PC repair even though I hardly ever actually do it.
 
Get a job at a local restaurant.
I'm a waitress at a pizzeria and not only do I get free Pizza, I get paid a good amount in tips.
