This has happend to me alot over the 4 years . it means steam is being itself and didn't tell you the server was down . (or you typed your password wrong)or you are like me and cant type worth a darn and you enter your password 3 times and you realize you have caps on . makes me mad sometimes :facewall:

EDIT : Steam is a pain in the butt sometimes .

Its back up though. You should be set

whenever steam is down, it will display that message. it will always go away when steam returns back to normal.

i had a problem like this an i restarted steam then it worked again...
try to reboot the pc if it doesn't work
