Class summary
The engie is as fun to play as you want it to be. He is a defensive class that is maybe the most useful class there is cuz he can build stuff that can mean the difference between victory and defeat. And no I am not being overdramatic. The engie has 125 hp and 200 metal.

Weapons
Shotgun
Engies primary weapon is the shotgun, and it is very effective in close quarters becouse it spreads its shotgun the closer the target is the more damage will the shot inflicts. You can defeat most of the classes with it but not all of them. It holds 6 rounds in the clip and another 32 in reserve.

Pistol
Secondary weapon, but it is not useless. It is good for mid to long range fighting. Just like scouts pistol but this one has MUCH more ammo, 12 in the clip and another 200(!) in reserve. Use this when your target is too far for an efficient shotgun shot or when you run out of ammo for your shotgun an close range.

Wrench
Multi purpose melee weapon. It is used for melee combat, to kill pesky spies, upgrading your buildings and removing sappers. This weapon has the biggest chance for a critical hit. While the building is being built you can hit it with the wrench and it will build a lot faster

Purpose of this class
The engie is not primarily a fighter. The engie is a builder. You can use the building tool to build the sentry gun, dispenser and teleporters.

Metal
The engie uses the metal to build his buildings and to upgrade them. You get metal from destroyed buildings, droped weapons, ammo packs, lockers and dispensers.

Buildings
Sentry Gun
Or just the sentry is an automatic turret that is used to cover vital parts of the map. The sentry has 3 levels. At lvl 1 it is just a little gun with modernate rate of fire. At lvl 2 it has 2 miniguns that are not as fast as heavy's but they can still kill a heavy. At lvl 3 the sentry is a dual minigun rocket launcher killing machine. With each level the SG gets more ammo, health, and deals more damage. You need 200 metal to upgrade a sentry from one level to another. This goes for all the buildings. Also if you want to restock your SG with ammo or repair it you need to hit it with the wrench and it will cost you some metal.

Dispenser
It is just used to provide your teammates with ammo and health. Enemy spies can leach health and ammo from it if they are disguised. It also has three levels. With each level it heals faster and gives more ammo at once.

Teleporter
It has two components, entrance and exit. One won't work without the other. It is used to help your teammates to reach the front line faster. It has three levels and with each level it recharges faster.

Classes that the engie can take on
Here I will just give you a brief list with a little piece of advice.

Scout
Try to kill him with a pistol if your aim is good. If it is not try to finish him off with a shotgun. Don't let them too close otherwise you will get killed.

Engie
Shotgun time, it just depends on your aim. Same as for the scout just the engie is not as dangerous at close range as the scout.

Medic
Not a challenge at all, just use your shotgun or your pistol while keeping out of his syringe gun range.

Sniper
Impossible at long range. Try not to get killed when you try to close the distance but i don't see why should you try to kill snipers, after all you are not suppose to play Rambo.

Spy
Engies nemesis. He will try to sap your buildings if you are far away from them. But once you recognize them you will kill them easily.

All other classes
Never try to take them on yourself. Just run or try to get them near your SG.

FAQ
Q: Which should I build first at the front lines, Dispenser or Sentry?
A: The dispenser cos it gives you metal and provides your team with health/ammo and it will help your team push forward

Q: When should I be building more forward?
A: When your teammates clear the way.

Q: Where would be the best place to put a teleporter entrance?
A: Right outside of the spawn cos it is easy to reach.

A: Does blocking doorways with dispensers really work?
Q: No, it gets destroyed easily.

Q: Why is line of sight important for a Sentry?
A: Cos the sentry that covers more vital parts of the map/chokepoints gets much more kills.

Q: What should I do when a Demo is throwing stickies towards my Sentry?
A: Try to take the stickies out with your shotgun/pistol or if there are too many just run.

Q: When should I abandon my Sentry and run when it's under attack?
A: When you can't fight back, that i kill the guy who is destroying your sentry.

Q: What is the optimal place for making a Sentry nest?
A: Build these at chokepoints or vital parts of the map. Also try to find a place that offers some cover.

Special thanks
DRaGZ for costructive criticism and helping me to improve the guide.

Summary
I hope that this guide helped to all of you who are just starting with this class. Fell free to comment the guide but don't post this guide on any other sites without asking me for permission first. Thx for reading.

Nice guide. I know I needed that when I was first starting. Just wanted to throw in a comment about the pistol. It has over 200 ammo so it's great for spy checking and constantly spamming a hallway to deter spy's. Also great for clearing stickies that can take your stuff out.

Also you can use dispensers offensively place them around corners and let a heavy spam the mess out of that hallway/area.

SG's can be placed offensivly too if your team knows how to push the enemy back enough. you just have to know the map well enough to place it secretely to get the jump on them.

"The engie is not a primarily fighter. The engie is a builder"

Really? How odd? Why didnt i figure that out!:facewall:

Very good guide CheeseW01f! Another hint is always to build the dispenser first, cause then it can provide you with metal to build the other buildings. Sentry's should be placed in location that are hard to sneak up on, and not in sniper range.

:P

Useful advice for the engineer:

When a demoman lays down 4 stickies near you and your sentrygun, keep wrenching your sentrygun. It is totally neccesary and is a must at all times

On a more advanced note, it is possible to physically 'stand' on top of either your dispenser or SG, allowing you to then jump up onto more advantageous positions that most other classes cannot get to.

(bar soldier with rocket jump, demo with stickies and scout with double-jump)

One little note, should have said you can also upgrade other friendly engi's stuff. other then that not bad at all..

Well I got a great postion for a dispencer that will block a scout from going down spiral on 2fort

Wrench
This weapon has the biggest chance for a critical hit.

i recently read somewhere that the solider's shovel actually has the biggest chance for crit, and the wrench is second. it was in a post by frisky somewhere, with some tf2 stats. if anyone is interested, i'll try and find the thread.

aside from what has already been mentioned, when cl!ff or any other demo is sticky-bombing your gun, ubered or not, back off and shoot the stickies. if you shoot enough of them off, it can save your sentry, which will then remove the presence of unwanted opponents when the uber runs out :) don't stand too close while attempting this though, as you will be all blownsed up after the stickies are detonated.

The Engy's wrench doesn't natively have the highest crit chance.

Crit chance is based on how much damage you have done as a character. For Engy, this includes their sentry. Since sentries do buttloads of damage at a time, their crit rate is usually high most of the time, making their wrenches more critty than normal.

I suspect Soldiers may have risen up that high because people are learning to splash damage right, and only good Soldiers tend to actually hit with the Shovel, so good Soldiers do loads of damage, and they use Shovel only around when their crit rates are high because they are good, and the Shovel hits tends to only count when good players, who have high crit rates, are hitting.

Engies, on the other hand, tend to rely a lot on their wrenches for close-range combat, good or bad. So the Wrench crit rate probably fell from the bad ones not having good Sentry placement/longevity.

That'd explain why all the GOOD snipers seem to crit when they shank me.

...Every freakin' time.

No, because you spelled "because" wrong.

haha jk jk
definitely! I love reading these helpful hints

Thats cool, but should i build a dispense close to my sentry? or far away?

Depends on the map Wolverine. Generally, try to build a dispenser in a location that's out of direct lines of fire by soldiers and demos, but accessible to your team for healing. Behind walls, behind the action, and around corners are the best spots.

Also, I don't mean to bag on the effort that people put into these guides, but they're usually a subset of the info at TF2 Wiki: http://tf2wiki.net/wiki/Engineer and http://tf2wiki.net/wiki/Engineer_strategy

If you really want to get better at a class, read TF2 Wiki and watch YouTube videos until you find your style.

good advice b-three-four-n-z. youtube has tons of tf2 videos.

Also, a lot of this material, plus more, is available at the TF2 wiki.

The existence of that wiki makes me wonder why these are necessary at all.
