XP vs. Vista

Edit: After realizing it, I should have posted on tech help but I don't know how to delete my post lol.

I currently have Vista 32 bit but I was thinking of going back to XP Service pack 2 because Vista is a huge memory hog and I only have 2 gb of memory to begin with. I've already dumbed down Vista as much as I can to help with performance and it has helped but I figured if TF2 runs good on XP with 2 gb and I dumb it down to make it look like 98, it might run better. Words of wisdom please. :facewall:

Xp is faster (if we arent counting the computer ''Size' ) Because xp doesnt have so much proghams.. So Vista is better Home computer but Xp is better gaming comp i think.

XP = DirectX 9
Vista = DirectX 10

Vista is better for gaming imo ;)
 
Well, Windows XP is great and all but I kinda like Vista better. Vista has DX10 while XP can only support DX9. You won't notice any graphic changes in TF2 because that game uses DX9 and DX8, but if you play a DX10 game such as L4D, you'll notice that it looks a lot less dynamic on XP. Only Vista has DX10, it cannot be installed on XP (Vista exclusive software).

But you are right to bacause Windows Xp uses less memory.

If you only wanna play TF2, XP is enough.

Vista is NOT a huge memory hog compared to XP. My vista with very little if any tweaking at all uses 750mb's of ram including video drivers, sound card drivers, ESET, Steam, mouse/keyboard software and a few other things. XP uses a couple hundred less MB's IF THAT.

The days of vista being the "bloated hog" ended shortly after release, while yes it does use more memory than XP that is due largely to its features. Disable some of them and it runs about the same as XP.

While it's difficult to judge with a ton of other stuff installed due to other factors... A fresh install of XP and a fresh install of vista will have little to no difference in gaming benchmarks. The false information here comes from when vista was under a month or 2 old, no longer the case.

Win 7 > Vista as the others have pointed out, however this isn't because vista is awful it is because 7 thus far has proven quite incredible. Unless you have a botched installation of vista or are running on 1GB of ram you will notice no difference gaming with XP instead of what you currently run.

Honestly, more RAM for your computer is the cheapest performance enhancing upgrade for your computer that you can get. Go buy more RAM.

That's fine, however for a thread where someone is asking "what should I do" or "what if" your advice is very unhelpful. Providing some sort of evidence or support rather than "I don't want to touch vista" with no explanation whatsoever would be a better approach :facewall:
 
I have vista on a good laptop and it's much faster than XP ever was for me. I think it's really just a matter of what hardware/software you have, and personal opinion
 
Alright. I'll try getting some more memory put in and try and get some upgraded software to see if that helps any. Vista sounds like it is worth keeping from what you guys are telling me although XP die hards did put up a valiant argument. Thank you all for your input. It was very helpful :)

In there defense, there is nothing wrong with XP aside from the lack of DX10 support if that matters to you for a particular game.

Both are fine OS's. That said after having 0 issues with Vista 64 (and significantly more performance along with DX10 support) I would never consider going back to XP in a million years.
 
when I met vista I was horrified! it was about 2.6 years ago, maybe a bit more. several games refused to run (i.e. simpsons hit & run, scarface, tony hawk's american wasteland). even MS's own stuff refused to run (i.e. visual basic, picture it! 2002) which IMO is horrendous. constant BSODs and aero was a "female dog" to run. I went back to XP. a while ago I decided to give vista another shot. (reformatted anyway due to a virus attack about 7 months ago)... with SP1 and 2 vista became tolerable. still some things refuse to work. (visual basic, I'm looking at you! ~MS hint hint!)

I downlaoded 7 and will install it probably on my "future" build, the one I've been talking about for a damn fecking year!
 
ya office 2003 don't like vista and 7 much either there trying to push you to use the new version and grab more money even know it pisses people of enough to pirate the newer versions of the software.
