Pet Peeve Time

Remember, these are my personal opinions. I'm not speaking for eGO in any capacity, or trying to set policy.

...but people have a right to play the way they feel fit. As long as they are not breaking the rules we as people who don't like that are just going to have to deal with it.
- seal lovin

Playing any way they feel fit as long as they are contributing to the team effort, and not playing in a manner that affects other players (or the team) negatively.

If it was a competitive scrim, then I could see how the behaviors would affect the performance of the team, but being a public server I see absolutely no problem or issue with it.
- J-Wall

Yes and no. Since DoD is a competative team based game, other players on your team may approach it as such. Otherwise we might as well be playing deathmatch arena. And tagged players should have their best behaviour on at all times as an example to the public players. Just a few gentle reminders and a little re-education is all that should be needed to break people of bad habits.

Again, all of the above are my personal viewpoints, and philosophy. We did field match teams for a bunch of years, so that type of gameplay definitely enters into it.

I agree with you, but most of the guys who are just shooting everywhere isnt members of this organisation so they wont get the knowledge of us being irritated for their actions. If i dont like ones actions i say it directly and hopefully he stop. But as i said i agree with you and it feels nice not to be the only one getting irritated on random shooting.

I agree with you on the spawn shooting, me, im usually a sniper or mg, so i kinda need to tell were everything is when its there, so i, and my team arnt killed.

Yep, It is annoying and distracting, but making a concrete rule about "No-shooting the walls in spawn" will not do anything to further the game, in my opinion it will just cause people to grief and whine and will make people leave. Yes, you can ask nicely, please don't shoot in spawn it's distracting. But you can't really make an official warning. Unless of course they are purposely shooting right infront of you while you are trying to snipe. Most rules are just guidelines of appropriate behaviour, and the consequences while enforcing them depend on the situation.

Bettie has once again explained proper procedure when on an eGO server. Some of you e's and eG's are still missing the point of "admining" or learning to admin one of our servers and not just hanging out getting along with everyone.

Let us say you are the only admin on a server for 5 hours. First of all, we have written eGO rules that you must follow and always use in support of your decision making when running a server. It certainly makes things easier when an issue comes up if a person breaks a written rule. The guilty party must follow eGO rules or they will be dealt with accordingly. Where admining starts getting tricky is when following unwritten rules, especially those that deal with consideration for others and being a fair sport. As stated before, in this example you are the only admin for five hours and it is from 3:00 am until 8:00 am in the morning, so you are on your own. All the other admins in the whole world are asleep! You have a full game of 32 players and they are all doing there own thing. No one is breaking the written rules, but on your team 3 guys are jumping up and down in spawn throwing smoke grenades and firing their weapons. Two guys outside of spawn are hitting each other with their fist and the other 11 guys are playing the game to win. On the other team 16 guys are playing as a unit to win. Now what do you do as an admin?

I pulled these two quotes.
Quote:Nothing you have stated are negative behaviors (or against the rules for that matter). Sure, it can be annoying or distracting, but I wouldn't go as far as looking down on others admins for just goofing around/having fun.end quote.
Quote:...but people have a right to play the way they feel fit. As long as they are not breaking the rules we as people who don't like that are just going to have to deal with it. end quote.

To you guys that made these comments, I ask what are you going to do on your server now? The team with the distractions, your team, will probably cause complaints from the serious gamers, that are tired of getting their butts kicked over and over by the other team playing in the spirit of the game. They will ask you or demand that you take care of the 4 or 5 guys shooting in spawn etc. Are you going to tell them that no written rules are being broken and if they do not like it go to another clan server? If eGO had that attitude we would have nothing but chaos and no one would play here. You as an admin must play and admin as a good sport. You ask people nicely to play the game, have fun or leave if they can not get along with the majority of players that play in the spirit of the game. I banned a player for one week just yesterday, for playing the game his way and the ruling leadership gladly backed up good sportsmanship. They always do. Go check it out in the ban forums.
The bottom line is that all games have written and unwritten rules. As an admin of eGO you must take a stand on our servers to keep the fair minded majority happy and not the few bad sports. By the way, this was your first 5 minutes of being in game. After your 5 hours of fun gaming are up you will have banned 4 players for cursing, admin abuse, dirty avatar, and filthy spray. On top of that you will have apologized 6 times, switched teams twice to talk to the guilty party, and have a kill to death ratio of 80 to 375. Have fun!!!!

In closing here are some of your "unwritten rules". The text below is taken from: History and Structure of eGO:History 101: EdgeGamers™ Organization

This clan's foundation rests on honor, loyalty, and integrity. We put heavy emphasis on maturity, fair play, helping others, and having a fun and competitive gaming experience that all can enjoy. Because of this, we have attracted the most dedicated members and experienced administrators in the gaming world. eGO has become a place where each admin can and does make a difference. No matter what real life brings, in the world of eGO, you are valued and counted on to help make things right.

Boyle makes an excellent point. So my question for you (all) is, when managing our servers, how do you balance who you try to accomodate? It's not going to be possible to make everyone happy, so where is the line drawn and what are the gray areas?

I just try my best to stick to the ideals of the clan. As we said earlier, it's about the spirit of the rules and the spirit of the game. If you want to goof around and blow off steam for a bit that's fine. If you keep it up for too long you become a detriment to the team and the server so you will be dealt with. It's not about making any group happy. It's about doing what is right.

About gray areas. I try my best to avoid them (however they do come to me on their own  ) and keep things simple. I am sure some of you may think I am a bit over zealous at times but 99% of the time something is either right or it is wrong. If I am ever in doubt, there are literally dozens of other eGO level members I can contact at any given time be it in game, vent, Steam chat, or the forums.

What are the gray areas? Well every single rule has gray areas even if they don't come up very often. Ask JohnT about that. He makes his living by knowing the gray areas. ;)

What can an (e) or (eG) do if they find themselves dealing with a gray area? The best advice I could give anyone is look to the (eGO)'s you play with. Follow their example and emulate them when ever you can. If you have a specific question you should ask it in an intelligent, non-emotional manner. You will be given an answer, even if the matter has to go all the way up the chain of command. That's right, I just admitted that (eGO)'s don't know everything. But we do know who to ask and what to do while we are waiting for an answer.

My pet peeve? Using the term hacker.

The people who use them are cheaters, the people who make them are hackers.

I agree with following the spirit of eGO. You can't make a rule for everything.

Some times in flash or other maps i like to shoot the hay stacks in spawn and bring it to the front just to make some modified cover in the front lines and exciting for me, if that caused any problem i won't do it anymore and find some other way to bring it up=D.

i dont know about this one ... i spam shoot my first clip almost always. Especially if it just started playing. I switch between two games mostly, DoD and starcraft, where i use two completely different mouse sensitivies. Doing this helps me get a feel for the mouse and also keeps hands warm for the action ahead. In fact if you look at most pro-RTS spamming is central to improving hand control. One thing for sure is that snipers should do this to help them get a better idea of no-scoping. Of course what i have said doesnt really apply to the throwing smokes or wasting ammo for classes like zooka.
Also i might add that if the flags are on the edge of being captured there really is no need to do this because the action wont be far away.

i agree completely...well...i have been known to forget that assault class only gets 1 nade and accidently pop smoke in front of an mg...my...lol...all of the above are extremely annoying...almost as annoying as a sniper shooting someone as you punch them in the back of the head...thats the worst imho...

First let me state that I respect both your and Bettie?s opinions regarding spawn shooting.

However I feel that your tone toward us ?e?s and eG?s? is rather condescending just because we feel differently about this subject. We all play on eGO servers and us eG?s have obviously earned our way up by acting mature and being respectable both in game and on the forums. Now I admit I don?t have as much experience as you regarding admining on eGO servers, but I can tell you that I have a fair deal of experience in dealing with people in all manners of life. Although DoD is a game, respect and camaraderie is crucial, both of which I have earned with all the people I play with. Like your high pathetical question I play at those exact times and I have it even harder than you since I don?t have one easy button that can permanently remove a trouble maker. If I want that to happen I have to hop on Steam try to find an eGO that is awake and then go on Vent if one isn?t, just to do one command that I don?t have access to. The only way I have managed to keep a lot of the pubs in line is by ?just hanging out getting along with everyone.? Although you may look down on us for chumming it up with the people on our servers, remember that we still know our responsibilities, and even though we don?t see eye to eye on a subject there is no need to criticize our abilities or standards of admining.

To get back to the subject we have to ask ourselves: Does spawn shooting have a strong negative effect on the game play on our servers?

To me the definite answer is NO.

It is extremely rare to have an individual or let alone a group fire at spawn round after round. Often if there is spawn shooting it will only last as long as it takes to empty all the rounds from a magazine or overheat a machinegun. Yes spawn shooting has an affect on ammo depletion, which could affect the role of mgs and schreks, but if the other members of the team stay committed to helping each other with ammo this should not be a problem.

Regarding maturity, spawn shooting, and punching is as mature or immature as using in-game taunts, victory shooting, putting bounties on players heads, or talking about anything except your 401k or how to diversify your portfolio to compensate for your IRA shortcomings.

I know that im not alone when I say; I would rather be on a loosing team having fun than a winning team that is only conserned about victory.

Honestly I haven never seen a third of the team doing such activities. Usually it's only one guy emptying a clip in spawn while rushing towards the center of the map, and sometimes you'll have one guy hitting another with a shovel or both of them doing it to each other.

If they are annoying someone else by directly hitting them with the shovel, standing in front of them, smoking their prone area repeatedly, I will step in.

If they are incessantly fooling around/keeping it up and disrupting the server, I will step in.

However, if they do it very occasionally or only empty their clip at the beginning of a new around, I will not interfere with that.

I think the argument at hand isn't so much as enforcing "unwritten rules", as it is using each of our own discretion as admins. Discretion is the reason the rules are unwritten. If they were meant to be enforced each time we came across them, they would be set in stone.

This is just my opinion, however I will continue to admin how I always have, using my own discretion towards those "unwritten rules", and quickly removing those breaking the officially written rules using the W/K/B procedure.

This is the RIGHT attitude. Remember, folks, this ain't rocket science. We're here to insure that our servers are clean and FUN. If in helping keep them clean and fun, we lose our direction, then it's time to step out of the game for a bit.

Only admin the players that are directly breaking the rules, or causing major problems for the server. It's a hell of a lot easier to step in when needed, as opposed to trying to control every one with an iron fist. Trying to make every single player do exactly what you want, when you want, and how you want is about as easy as herding cats.

Moral of the lesson: Don't be a cat herder.

If anything come from this thread. It should be a thoughtful thread starter award for Bettie and a Wordsmith award for KP :)

HAHA when i read "cat hearding" i was thinking about that commercial!

A tough job

Cat herding. I grew up in Oklahoma and somehow missed this!
