it was random unidentified monster #372. We don't really know, and it didn't matter. The monster wasn't the point of the movie was what they were getting at there. The monster was the equivalent of any random natural disaster, just worse.

It was a mutated sea monster that has babies fall off its back and eat people who haven't payed their taxes..........or something like that.

I read up about it and the things it drops off are the equivalent of fleas you find on a dog. Also it is a young monster. The creators nicknamed the creature Clover.
