Recommendations for Improvement on the servers

Okay, I used to admin servers before, and here are some recommendations from me on how to improve eGO servers.

Ordinarily, I would write a forty page treatise detailing the importance of certain aspects... but I'll keep my recommendations short for easy reading.

- Map rotations take too long,
1 hour is a very long time for a map, anybody who wanted to play on a certain map for that long will almost certainly go to the dedicated server.

My Suggestion
Make rotations 30 minutes, two rounds on attack-defense maps (i.e. one round of attacking, one round of defending for each team), or first to three on CP maps, whichever is longer.

- Remove Lazytown
Let's be frank, Lazytown isn't what I'd call an A-grade map. We don't really need a server dedicated to a map which is stalemate prone, takes too long to play, and really isn't much fun past the half-hour mark.

My Suggestion
Convert the Lazytown server into a custom map server, heck, make it a Turbine server if you'd like, at least turbine isn't as stalemate prone as 2fort. If you'd like, we could turn it into another rotation server.

- 3 Sniper/Spy Cap (maybe 4 engi cap)
Okay, I know I'm going to get a lot of flak for this recommendation, but implementing it is going to decrease the number of matches which descend into farce.

All too often I've seen teams with four, five snipers, guess what? They lose, and more often than not, those snipe
rs and spies tend to be placed rock-bottom on the scoreboard.

I've observed several matches, and here's what I've noticed on a team with more than one sniper or spy: One particular sniper or spy is very good, he's usually up there in the leaderboard, top 5, top 3, around there. The other two snipers and spies are at the bottom, dragging their team down and being counterproductive as they attract attention to the good spy.

My Suggestion:
3 Sniper cap, 3 spy cap, 4 engi cap, simple as that

-Map rotations; i agree, but then again im usually on dedicated servers.
-As far as lazytown goes, ive played it once, and it was enough for me, im more of a 2fort and turbine kinda guy, so i can agree with ya on that one too.
-Now character caps, i dunno. I figure leave it to the team, if they wanna attempt a 12 man spy rush then they should be able to, lets not stupid proof matches by guiding people to other classes *POINTS AT THE HEAVY & MEDIC* in order for our team to win a match. and sometimes i like 12 engineers putting sentries in a row at 7am...LOL.

eGO wont put a class limit on the servers. We dont force people to play how we want.

I think even though it may be against the rules to request a change in the servers, I remember JohnT saying one time that its the members that get to build up and decide what takes place in eGO. I think Echelon has some good points that should be considered.

Maybe we could see you ask at the next TF2 Q&A? :)

Thanks for your opinions and suggestions! The only one I'll address at the moment is the class cap. eGO is not going to put a limit on the number of any certain class right now. Our current policy is to allow people to play in any way they want as long as they are not griefing or breaking our rules. So, that's one we won't be putting into effect any time soon.

I don't want to necropost a thread =P

I'll be there if it isn't on at 3am on my side... maybe I'll post some questions beforehand.

Map rotation to long? well, i dont want to say they could be longer, actually there about perfect. You get about 2 or 3 good runs on each side (unless your supertrooper or andyistall and get scrambled EVERY round and never leave the red team) i think it's it's enough to get into your grove without it wearing out it's welcome. (note, this is from experience on pl maps, so it might be different with other game types.

Haven't played lazytown yet, but hasn't it only have it's server for less than a week? give it a chance. I thought turbine was the worst possible map you could have for 24/7 (until i played pipeline) because it can turn into a gigantic turtle map, but some people swear by it. it's all a matter of perspective and opinion.

Class restriction, i could make an argument of how it would help, but i can also see why we don't have it so ill just leave this one alone.

well i only play in 2fort

but the class limit would drop the server population dramatically.

Map time is fine. It really shouldn't be changed. Lazytown is a weird map, I'd much rather it be a 24/7 server of like Goldrush or something else. Class cap is dumb because i twill drop server population drastically. If people want to play something, that's their business, but we can't force them to play something else, because then they will just leave.

I believe that eGo has enough 24/7 servers that if someone wanted to play a map, they could switch to another server. I like that =)

eGO wont put a class limit on the servers. We dont force people to play how we want.

Just what to say and how to say it.
Class capping is bad because some people will always play as sniper and take up a spot for the full hour...
Pathetic people are the ones who do it, but you still get em!

Personally i like Lazytown. I think the solution to it being so prone to locking up is the instant respawn. If the respawn was slowed down a little, it would give the other team a chance to cap that last point in some way other than changing to pyro and suicide rushing the point over and over until they build up enough cap to win.

Map rotation is fine.

Lazytown I do think should be changed.

We will never have class caps.

I actually have a few suggestions for the Lazytown server map changes...

1. cp_fastlane. A great map, it's a community map gone official. It's much loved by the competitive community and it's a perfectly balanced 5 point push CP map. There aren't many servers running it 24/7 and I have a feeling it would get much love.

2. cp_badlands, the exact same reasons as the things above.

3. cp_toyfort. We ran this server a few months back and it was full a lot of the time. It's a really quirky and interesting custom map that has a pretty solid fan base. It's a 5 point CP push map that's very balanced and can bring in good, long competitive games.

4. cp_warpath. Yeah, I know, I know, I was a warpathian. I loved that map like it was my own flesh and blood. But as far as I know, this was our furthest standing 24/7 custom map server we ever had. We had built a huge community around it and I know a bunch of people were really crushed when we let it go.

5. A no crits/dmgspread server. Everybody complains about crits, so why not provide them with a no crits server? It would be a stock rotation with RTV or we could make it a 24/7 server for a certain map. 2Fort IR could possibly work as that seems to be a wildly popular map.

6. A fun server... I know we have an in-house one, but what about a public one? We could put RTD on it or any other fun custom plug-ins that the community would like to try out. Airblast jumps, the TF2 grenade mod, friendly fire. Or we could make that modification to the Randomizer server. Of course, you'd probably want to remove HLXStats :P It could run custom or stock maps, or a combination of both

7. A modification. Zombie mod, Pyro Dodgeball, Ammomod, cp_duel, sniper wars, TF2 soccer. Those always have a solid community that loves to play them. Plus they're a great break from the regular TF2 world. I would have said Soldier basketball, but methinks that wouldn't go over well with 32 people. *imagines dire chaos and rocket spam*

That's just my two cents, some people may feel the same.

Yeah, I don't really like class limits, that would drop the server population. I don't like to wait on having to be a class.

Actually eGO has had class cap on five different servers for over a year and a half and maybe for three. Sniper and Rocket are capped at 2 players per team on Avalanche, Charlie aka Strand, Donner, Flash, and Kalt. They are on the DoD side, not TF2, but never say never.
