Ok so I'm currently thinking of uninstalling McAfee & replace it with one of these two: Avast or Comodo. I'm looking for overall performance in protecting my new gaming rig so I was wondering which one is better & why. Or, if there are better programs out there that are free, please feel free to tell me its name & why it's better than Avast/Comodo. I need suggestions quick because I'm scared of my rig getting attacked by things I don't want :scared:

avira anti-vir is widely considered to be one of the best anti-virus programs by pretty much everyone at hardforums. It scores high on some program that rates anti-virus scans (I don't care to read all the details myself, I just trust the common consensus over there). It is free for personal use. I use it, along with common sense on what I do and don't click, and have never had a problem.
Use Avira for the anti-virus, and Comodo for the firewall.
You can't go wrong there, try using Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware and even Malwarebytes for extra spyware and trojan scanning. (The last three don't run all the time and only used for scanning)

... i dont have an antivirus. i practice safe computing. i've only had one virus in the last two years (which came from a flashdrive someone shoved into my laptop). IMHO antivirus is a huge waste of money. its like that supplemental car insurance for cars over 100k miles... you'll use it, but it will never pay for itself because it is easier to write windows off and just reinstall if something fubars you.
Safe computing or not, you will get a virus eventually, just go to the wrong website, click the wrong link, it can happen.
All of the antivirus programs we listed are all free, and even if they weren't, its not a "huge waste of money" as much as it is insurance for your important files. You may say its not a big deal now, and that you can just reformat, but if all of the important files you have could be infected, you are, as you're pretty much screwed.
I use Avast for Anti-Virus protection because it is just very very good. Many consider it to be the best free virus protection out there, and for a firewall I use Comodo. The Comodo anti-virus isn't very good, but the firewall, and defense+ are very good. The defense+ is annoying though, so I disabled that, but I still use the Comodo Firewall.

sorry, but i still win. network storage for all my documents. running on vmware with rotating backup on an external drive, running behind a ISA server, and still behind a Cisco ASA(gns3 ftw)... all of this at home. I feel pretty safe.
regardless. if you do some simple things like running AdBlock and NoScript with Firefox, you'll block 99.99% of drive by downloads. Common sense is the best antivirus.

entens you make me feel less out-there about having a solid network at my house. I'm behind the times though, I'm behind a PIX 515e and a few old catalysts. Quite the little PowerEdge 830 powerhouse you've got there. I got really sad when I saw ISA though...

I run Avast! for WHS because 1) I have a WHS and 2) it integrates tightly with the WHS console (see first picture below) and 3) you get a year of 10 licenses plus the WHS license for $80. Did I mention it uses like no resources compared to other products (second picture below)?
