My games framerate?

Something is wrong with my game, it will be running fine at 25-70fps then at random it will drop to 9fps. It can be anywhere, even in an empty area. Then like if it never happened, 5 seconds later it will snap back to how it was running before. It's also been happening fairly recently, like 3 months ago it wouldn't do this.

Any ideas on what might be wrong? I already defragmented my hard-drive, Re-installed the game and Windows(I'm currently using windows 7) and it still does it.

Any chance that something like a virus scan might've been running? Or does the frame rate drop happen pretty consistently when playing?

It happens every 5-10 minutes then just pops back to normal frame rate. I'm pretty sure no virus scanning programs are running either, I disables the start of all of them from services.msc

it might be a internet connection problem.

are all your drivers up to date aswell?

I'm pretty sure it's our internet, all my drivers are up to date and when I was on a faster connection during the summer when I went to California to visit family, it never happened.(I'm on a laptop so it's the same computer )

I'm sorry for the DP, but this is making TF2 almost unplayable at times, I tried some other connections and it still did the same thing. This never used to happen before, I don't understand.

I had this too. Try cleaning out your computer of dust. That is what fixed it for me.

Also, when you're in the server, turn on net_graph 3. Loss and gain would be your connection.

is it possible your GPU is overheating and it's throttling the speed and reducing framerates?

no, it could probably be the fact that your computer is filled with dust, try cleaning it out either that or run TF2 at a lower setting.

if its fps that drops just make sure you're not overheating or there isn't programs running in the background

i agree. your video card overheating could easily cause that issue. even your cpu overheating could throttle your framerates, although that usually ends in your computer shutting down.

drivers up to date is a must for gaming. most ppl got that covered ne way tho lol. and another possibility is if you have a virus or any programs that are sucking resources it could cause you to lag like that. try opening task manager and going to processes and sorting by memory and then cpu to see whats using the most memory. if there are unnecessary programs running just end them. careful u dont end any system processes or you might blue screen lol.. if u find anything that is frequently starting up and sucking resources go into start->run type msconfig and go to startup and remove it so it doesnt bother u ne more. hopefully you find a solution so you can start.. like.. u know.. pwning noobs.. again.
