I've bought a mic some time ago and I finally decided to use it again. I was trying to play L4D and everyone on my team said they couldn't hear me. I tested it out and I even the game test doesn't hear me. Is there something with my microphone or is my sound card kinda broken.

If its the first, What's the best and least cost microphone I can buy. My limit is roughly $30 without tax included. And also, I would prefer to buy it at Fry's if you guys have any suggestion. ANd Headset is preferred

Try going to the "sound and audio devices" in your control panel, hitting "advanced" button in the "device volume" part. In the window that pops up go to options and hit properties. Click the button for "Recording" and then hit OK. Make sure the check box on the recording window is under microphone and not input. If that not the problem lemme know & I can try to think of something else, though this is the most common issue :)

you can turn on the 20db mic gain button that will boost up your mics input. Open your volume conrol amd click on the advance button under mic settings and highlite the 20db mic boost box

Control panel-->sound -->Recording> make sure you mic is set as default device.

pretty much what Stinky Wizzleteats said.

Thanks guys, i'll try it out. If there is anything wrong still, I'll post it.

Ok, So I tried the Test Microphone Option in L4D and i can finally hear myself. Hooray. But i can't find that boost option. So help me again on this.

Should be in settings under voice.

Boost microphone gain, is what it should say or something along those lines.

in windows xp go to control panel and open sound and audio devices. Click on the volume tab and the advance button under device volume. This will open a panel where you will see different things like cd player volume, line in, mic , aux ect.. There should be a button that says advance under your mic, click on this button and you should see a box to checkmark to turn on mic gain.

if you found that when you heard you voice when you tested your mic it was low or you had to hold the mic right to your face to hear yourself is the only time you should have to turn on mic gain.

Also when you tested your mic using windows it should have brought up this same panel where you can turn on you mics boost. So you can go back into sound and sound devices and test hardware tab, then choose mic and you will see this same panel (volume control panel) where under mic there should be an advance button you can click on to turn on your mics boost. Doing it this way allows you to hear the difference it make as you test your mic with it off and on.
