Get Win7 for $30 if you are a college/university student. You need a .edu email address to sign up for this one, and it's straight from Microsoft. Obviously that limits it, but I'm sure there are people here with an .edu email address or a friend with one!

UPDATE: They have taken windows 7 down from the site. You can still get the other software, as well as vista and xp, but windows 7 is no longer part of the deal.


I wanted to share with your guys a nice deal I found over at hardforum. It lets you get Windows 7 Pro RTM (the same copy that is sold in stores) for $20.

You are supposed to be a student to get this offer, I cannot confirm that they check, but I am a student, used my .edu email account, and had zero problems.

You download the .iso files and burn them yourself, and they give you 8 win7 keys. In addition, there are a ton of microsoft titles you can get, including xp, vista, server 08, and th list goes on.

If you are thinking of upgrading to windows, this is a better way to go as you get the full versions. If you think you might be building a rig in the next 4 years, I would highly recommending getting your copies now!

I have seen that before on other forums I visit and I still have yet to get a straight answer. I am already getting my Windows 7 Ultimate thru Microsoft expert zone but I do like the rest of the software that is available.
 
How they are giving out the iso of the OS if it is not out yet. I know its the RTM but only data copy manufactures and OEM manufactures hired/contracted by Microsoft should have the copies until shipping for retail release a couple of days before Oct. 22.
 
When you sign up for ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) and pay your $20, that entitles you to "opt-in" for free membership to the MSDN AA (Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance). Essentially, Microsoft wants to give free copies of software to students to help further development, so they set up the MSDN AA. You actually are downloading the .iso files right from Microsoft, through their developer network.
 
I'm willing to try. Gotta cash in on being a broke college student sometime.

I've gotten on, downloaded the .iso's, and installed them on a machine. It works.
 
I saw this and wanted to post my experience.

This was originally posted a week or so ago and now its all over the internet. I did this last week without any problems. I paid the $19 and got my MSDN membership, etc. I was able to download and install W7 Pro RTM 64bit on my box. I have also gotten a license for XP Pro w/SP3.

When this deal was initially posted, the hardforum site said you could only get two licenses from this deal, but that is not true. You can get one license for EVERY product on the download page, which is LOTS. They have Enterprise Server 03 and 08, Visual Studio, Project 07, Access 07, etc, etc. However, the Office Suite is NOT on the list. The reason why it was said that you could get only two licenses was because this website only had two licenses for Windows 7. Since then, they have put up a Spanish, French, Japanese, and German languages. And for each language, theres a 32 and 64 bit version. So technically, you can get 10 keys now. And from what I've heard, you can use a Chinese 64bit key on an English 64bit ISO. I have not tried this though.

HOWEVER!!! Here's the bad news. Since this deal is ALL over the internet, the ACM website is putting extra registration criteria in place. My friend tried to do this deal yesterday and the ACM website is now asking for his student ID and the name of his educational advisor at his school. My friend did some research on this and found out that ACM cannot legally use this information or cannot verify this information, I cant remember which. So my friend just put some bogus information in but he still cannot "opt-in" for the MSDN-AA membership. His payment and membership to ACM are complete though so maybe eventually he will get to opt-in.

So yea, that's all I know. I wanted to warn you that this deal may not work anymore.

And no, I won't sell my keys! :P
 
Other catch is that you won't be able to go online and see your keys after a year has passed. They are still good, but you will need to write them down and keep track of them yourself. Tough, I know.

Lance, I don't know if it will work for you or not, you might want to go read the fine print and see. Especially, if losing $20 is a big deal to you (to some it isn't, it is to me!).
 
Heh, since I'm a CS student at UNLV, I don't even have to pay $20. Thanks for letting me know that they had Windows 7 on there!
 
I just got the "opt-in" option available :D I am getting excited and cant wait to upgrade my RC 1 to full version of win 7 :D

I don't think you can upgrade your rc1 to full version I believe you have to do a clean install but I might be wrong.
 
Go to the department and ask if you are given free membership to the msdn aa.

You can upgrade if you want, when I loaded my disc it gave me that option. Although, I wouldn't recommend it for any installation of windows.

As far as whether or not win7 is better than vista, the answer is pure and simple: YES
