Today i got a free custom built desktop from my moms friend. I have not got it completely set up yet but im working on it. Here are the specs:
Motherboard: Abit AN78GS
Processor: AMD Phenom triple core @ 2.3GHz
RAM: 2x 1GB patriot+ 2x 512MB
GPU: Nvidia 8200 (I plan to upgrade this)
Power Supply: 480W
Hard drive: 40GB (im buying a new one tomorrow)
Any comments would be great or any suggestions of what i should upgrade.

slap a video card in and you should be good to go!

Then I'd upgrade the processor next. Maybe a phenom ii, or even just an athlon ii would be a nice improvement.

Cool. You may be able to unlock the 4th core in that AMD. Not sure of the motherboard will do it though, I'm not currently using AMD, so I am a bit out of the loop. What PSU does it have?

cg

you should get a ATi 4770 for that puppy seeing as it has a rather weak psu and the 4770 doesn't use that much power.

The motherboard has 1x PCI express x16 and 2x PCI gpu slots what gpu should i get?

Well it is free, I would recommend going with a HD 4850 since they are so cheap now. Just check if your PSU has good enough amperage to run it.

Will a pci express 2.0 x16 graphic card work in a pci express x16 slot?

Yeah, it will. I'm doing right now :D . Knowing what PSU you have will go a long way in helping you to choose an appropriate video card.

100% yes

Open the case and tell us the brand of the psu, as well as the number of volts on each of the 12V rails.

yea get a 4850....they are like $95 now, the 4770 is almost as fast as a 4850 but its also on like a 40nm process so it runs cooler and stuff. Its funny though, a crossfire 4770 outperforms a crossfire 4850 while a single 4850 outperforms a 4770 and the 4850 has more graphic horsepower in general.

oh well........can't wait till the 5870x2 comes out, gonna slap one of those babies in my computer, my 1000w PSU should handle it.

i think its because of the 4770 using newer manufacturing tech and DDR5.
and your beastly PSU should handle it just fine.
speaking of the ATI HD 5000 series, when are they coming out? i saw something about October 4th or something.

nope they are coming out september 22nd......the 5870x2 will come out about a month after that.

The ATI 5870 is going to be faster than a GTX 295. Its going to have a core clock of 825mhz and 1600 stream processors, up from 800 on the 4870, basically 2x more.

The ATI 5850 is going to be almost as fast as a GTX 295. Its going to have a core clock of around 725mhz to 750mhz. It will have i think 1400-1450 stream processors from 800.

The ATI 5870x2 is gonna have 3200 stream processors and the performance gain is expected to be around 40-60% faster than the GTX 295.

Nvidia is gonna have some trouble again this war, only because they may not be able to manufacture a dual chip graphics card this time around. Their dies are too large from what has been leaked and many of the techwizs don't think they can make a dual chip card. Their single card chips are expected to beat the ATI 5850/5870 cards though. The 5870x2 seems to be the fastest though unless Nvidia is going to be able to manufacture a dual chip card with their new GTX 300 series but it doesn't seem possible at the time. We will have to wait and see till next year when their new GTX 300 series cards roll out, even though ATI will have a big head start over them.

yea, i am looking strongly forward to xmas, i want my 5850! lol. almost as good as a GTX 295? ownage. on a single chip card? pure ownage

You may be able to unlock the 4th core in that AMD.

nope, the "tri core" amd cpu's are actually defect quad cores. Dont get me wrong, they kick butt for the price... just just can't unlock the 4th. Really smart move on amd's part. They would regularly just recycle the cpu, but now they get to make a profit or at least cut their losses.

and you might need a bigger power supply, as that wont be enough for upgrades, go for the 700 that will be plenty lol.

I just bought a Nvidia 9800gt, if it doesn't work with my power supply i will just buy a new power supply.

the 4770 requires less power so your 480w PSU should be able to handle it.

EDIT: the 9800gt you bought should do fine too, if not you can always buy a new psu.

but when they run out of defective quads to resell they use perfectly good quad core with one core disabled.
