I was doing speed tests one evening and found this to be my speed

I was wondering if anyone here could enlighten me to why my connection to Dallas is so much better than to across town.

This is college internet btw.

Thanks.

Well... your ping across town is way to big... maybe your local isp was just having traffic problems xD

yea K is right. it depends on your test servers bandwidth they can handle. I have the same situation. Its just on the test servers settings that depend on your test results. I usually test on different speed test servers to find the sweet spot.

Also Road runner is a shared connection with anyone else around you who has it business or residential. So your speed will always fluxuate but remain at a somewhat constant speed.

It could be your University has very few hops between it and a large backbone connection connecting it straight to Dallas. Locally your packets probably have to travel through lower bandwidth lines and more nodes with more people connected to them.

It's like getting straight on the interstate with a high speed limit versus driving around town with a lower speed limit and stop lights.

Or the infrastructure for the Dallas server could just be better allowing it to support more connections at a higher speed. Or the Floria server could just be more overloaded.

So many possible reasons.

alright cool. yeh im figuring its sorta like die said, just fewer more direct connection to a major hub like dallas. Just trying to make sure its not me.

Personally, I think your ping was just happy to be going to Texas. It would have been in a hurry to get here..and then hurried back home to tell all it's friends how great it is here...

I seriously doubt any packets would want to visit your flat and dry state. More than likely they were excited because they got to go through Arkansas on the trip over there. Plus he's in Florida so they're SEC packets and enjoy touring the conference. We have the best football teams and the best packets.

Silly Hillbilly, tricks are for kids! Why would those packets travel all the way to Arkansas? Your gran-pappy's moonshine is NOT mouthwash!

On a serious note...they have football in Arkansas? I don't remember a NFL team there...

No NFL, just college football. Arkansas Razorbacks.

ISP's pay to get access to other company's lines so if the lines between you and Dallas have more available bandwidth then between whoever runs the servers in your town its possible to get a faster speed. Alternatively the server in your town could have just had a large load and thus slower speeds. Try it again at a later time to get a better idea.
