Warsow is a free standalone first person shooter game. It is based on the Qfusion 3D engine (a modification of the Quake 2 GPL engine), and aimed on the competitive scene, or the e-sports community.

The base gameplay is focussed around the art of movement, meaning moving, speed and tricks play a big part in the gameplay. Besides this, mapcontrol, aim, teamplay and fragging skills play their role too.

Another twist in gameplay is Warsow's weapon system. Warsow has two firing modes for each weapon; by picking up a weapon, you will be equipped with the weak ammo for the weapon, but when you pick up an ammo pack, you will equip your weapon with strong ammo. Weapons may have different damage or slightly different behaviour depending on what ammo you use: for instance: the weak electrobolt is a high speed projectile, whereas the electrobolt with strong ammo is instant hit. This way, not only control of health and armor plays a role, but getting strong ammo is a valid way to create a comeback.

Visibility is an important aspect in Warsow. Using a celshaded, cartoon-like style on the maps, textures, and models Warsow tries to combine good visibility, suitable for competitive gameplay, with having a unique, attractive and personal style. It tries to keep the graphic effects minimalistic, clear and visible.

Summary
  • Standalone game for Windows and Linux
  • 3D Engine based on Qfusion (a modification of Quake 2 GPL engine)
  • eSport oriented FPS
  • Fast-paced gameplay focused on trix (trick jumps) and art of move
  • Complete Power-up System including Weak and Strong fire mode for each weapon
  • Cartoonish graphics with celshading-like_but_not_Manga style, mixing dark, flashy and dirty textures, matching with action full of fun and speed
  • References : Quakeworld, Quake3 CPMA, Jet Set Radio, Speedball.

Looking at, im not tempted, but the way in which you have explained it has intruiged me, i may well buy the game if its a decent price and comes out on steam.

It's FREE! There's no reason not to try it.

Calle, that looks awesome. I'll be trying it out..And wow, for something that's powered by id Tech 2..That simply looks awesome!

Looks alright. It does look graphically great for using that engine, but I do have to say... it's an Unreal clone. And from what I saw in the FPS footage it doesn't play that much differently while your actually playing from Unreal, just shows people jumping off walls and such. But I guess for a free game, you can't go wrong.

Quake 1 was released in 1996 while Unreal Tournament came out 1999. Which game is the clone now? :P
Warsow is simply a (damn good) mod for Quake 2, it may not change the gameplay incredibly much but it's still executed well.

No offense... this one is still the clone. This game was recently made, and looks and plays like Unreal, not Quake. I know the history quite well. I actually even had a class about it. This is however an Unreal clone.

Sorry Ace, but I gotta agree with Calle here. Facts are facts, and Quake did come out before UT, so if anything UT is a clone of Quake.

By your logic every game has to be a clone of another game until we go all the way back to pong, because it had some measure of physics, and 99.9% of games after that did. Warsow is now a Pong clone. See how silly that sounds?

Who cares if it has the same mechanics as a quake game or unreal game?
Is Quake fun? Yeah. Give the mechanics a face lift and some minor/major tweaks you get Unreal. That fun? OK, give that one tweaks and a face lift. And then you get Warsow.

People will mimic the success of others until the end of humanity, the point is not whether or not it's a clone, what matters is it any fun on it's own?

BTW pong wasn't the first video game ever.

First commercial video game
1971: Computer Space

Two months after Galaxy Game's installation, Computer Space by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney was released, which was the first coin-operated video game to be commercially sold (and the first widely available video game of any kind, predating the Odyssey by six months). Both games were variations on the vector display 1961 Spacewar!; however, Bushnell and Dabney's used an actual video display by having an actual television set in the cabinet.

That rant aside...

The game looks like a cell shaded UT clone... im a sucker for cell shaded :3 and i like UT. I hope they have soemthing similar to the impact hammer... that's all I do in UT3

Meh, I actually downloaded and played this a few weeks back. The learning curve is too steep for me, either that or I'm just really bad at fast-paced off the wall (no pun intended) shooters. But it's probably me, since I still have trouble timing rocket/sticky jumps on TF2.

It was sorta fun, but I'd highly recommend trying it to anyone else since you may enjoy it.

I was just going by the fact that it's the oldest game I know of, no need to go wikipedia on me :P

And if you didn't wiki that and are just reciting from memory, you should be ashamed :O

no I've know this since trivial pursuit in the 9th grade. I just have to back it up :P b/c people are extremely skeptical to hear pong isn't the first commercially sold game.

Hm.. it actually wasn't as fast paced as I thought it would be. It is kinda to slow for me, I like the even faster pace of quake.

If anything, a Quake clone since that's what Warsow is based on. Who cares if it's a clone.

...I'm sorry, what? It is a mod for Quake. It plays like Quake.

Honestly, I don't really feel a difference when I'm playing. The Trailer was slowed down at some points so maybe that was the problem. In-game I don't notice a difference in the speed.
