such nice things but then only like a mid-end graphics card and case
why not get like a 4870x2 or something and fully utilize that CPU of urs
and get a higher quality case so all ur high end components look nicely in it and get better cooling, airflow and room??
also i would go with an Asus MOBO, like an ASUS P6T or something, just not the P6 SE
 
I actually picked out this case specifically because I liked the look. And I was thinking about getting another 4870, but I'm not sure. And I don't really want to get one of the Asus boards, since they use dual gigabit ethernet ports, and I only have 1 slot dedicated for this box on the router. Also, I'm not trying to spend too much money, I started out just wanting the processor, but then I realized that I'd need a new mobo with the right socket, and new PSU because my old one didn't have enough cables, and a new case just because the headers in my current one are dead (only 6 USB slots oh noes!). And then I had to get new ram because it only supports DDR3, so this was only supposed to be a 570$ project, but then I realized all that other stuff. I'm satisfied with my GPU, I can go full settings on whatever resolution I want and still get well over 150 FPS.

I really just didn't want to spend too much, it kinda got out of hand. So, any suggestions on a case that isn't over $100?

Go with a ASUS P6T and a i7 920... then OC your CPU to like 3.6GHz like I did and save $$$...

The P6T is a great motherboard for the i7 / x58 series CPU and Chipsets respectively.

Trust me its not hard to OC an i7 if you want me to show you how, I can PM you with what to do.

RAM and GPU look fine, I have a similar 4870 and any game I throw at it with my i7 @ 3.6ghz I can easily max out @ 1920x1200 with full AA (Cept Crysis, since that's not physically possible to max that game out with 60+fps). Also have the same 6GB 1333mhz Triple Channel RAM.
 
Any specific reason why you went with a 950 or 920? If it was me I would go with a 920 and use the money saved to upgrade something else. Maybe a nice aftermarket cpu cooler and some better memory. Or you could get a better gpu with the savings...
 
yea u should go i7 920 + asus P6T and get a case like a Cooler Master HAF

Microcenter.com sells the i7 920 for only 200 dollars but you can only find them instore so check if a store near u has one and go pick one up for $200!!!!!
 
I don't see why you would go for the 950. Get the 920 for much less money, and OC it to be about the same as the 950.
 
a Core i7 920 do stepping over clocked to 3.6ghx is better then 950 and a hole lot cheaper

look at the pic on mine thats 4.0 ghz

also might want to look into an ASUS, FOXCONN, or EVGA Mobo if you plan on overclocking.

CAS 9 Latency for your memory wont be the most efficient or fast...try looking for the memory that might be a little higher in MHz (like PC 1600) or memory that has a lower CAS Latency. The price difference will be pretty small (maybe $20 - $40) but youll get better use out of it.
 
What's your budget? Just wondering. I want to make a custom cart and see what you think. Could probably get you a much better build for a little cheaper.
 
My budget is anywhere up to $1,600 to $1,700.
Anyways, a few updates. I am going with the Asus P6T Mobo, and then the i7 920 (because everyone recommends it and Rogue Sniper showed me how to OC it)

By the way, CAS latency is more for Photoshop, Audio/Video studio / creator programs than gaming... Though if it is the same price for CL7 as CL9 Id go for it cause we all eventually get into Photoshop or a similar program or whatever...
 
Well, right now I'm looking at a system that will cost me about $1650, so it's exactly what I want. I can get all the performance that I want, and all the power and cooling I need to run it. Thanks for all the help, and I'll still take suggestions, but this is probably what I'm going with.
