Random Lag Spikes

Regardless of the game I play, or where I am at, or what network I am using, I get random lag spikes.

The worst of it appears to be at my house, where I'll be running in CS:S and all of a sudden I jump back 3-5 seconds.

Its been going on for far too long now.

I don't know what to do.

Two thoughts.

One, if you are only playing in eGO servers, they have been lagging lately.
Second, if that is not the case, go to your video settings and disable multi-core rendering, if it is already disabled, then good luck!

Personal experience. I had a $1500 computer and I wasn't about to start dealing with lag.

Ahh, it is somewhere in video settings, probably advanced.

I'm using a Motorola Modem (year or 2 old) and Charter Communications

Hmmm, have you tried another network? Possibly your friends house? Also, try and connect to other servers that are near you, maybe its just the server is too far away.

Well it is actually a lot better at another friend's house.

But I have absolutely no idea why it is so awful at my house.

Hmmm, try restarting your router, or if you have another ethernet plug, try plugging your comp directly into your router/modem.

Lag spikes might be the cause of the rates here are the proper rates you should have
Rate 25000
cl_cmdrates 66
cl_updaterrate 60 (101 is suggest so that the console will automatically change it to 66, 60)

also if you still get lag spikes or "chokes" then try lowering the graphic as to many things might be going on in your screen.

Did all of the above, still getting the spikes.

No lag on other networks, just on my own.

Signal strength is great (sometimes better than elsewhere) and I still get the spikes.

well, are you using a router? or a direct connection through cable? cable connections are usually better

Are you playing over wireless internet?
If you can plug in a cable that should speed things up.

How many other people are using your network?
If someone else connects to the internet while you are playing you might also notice some lag.

Lastly, please post your computer specs so we can see if there are any problems there.

I run

ping -n 60 www.google.com

and I lose about 1 packet per 60 seconds. Right now I am also running Vista-Anti-Lag, which appears to be helping.

Yeah try switching to a cable rather than wireless.. it can really make the difference.... also you might be running everything on to high of settings... I had to lower my shader settings on some games while playing online... (i have a really fast computer and i still had to lower the settings :-(
