Constant, serious lag

Alright, so fairly recently, I am incapable of playing TF2 with the lag that I am getting. It seems like it has to do with the player count, as in it's really bad in our 32 slot servers, but I can at least play in lower populated servers.

I'm running Vista Home Premium 64 bit
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.40 GHz
6 GB RAM
And this is a laptop, if that matters.

I have never been good with this stuff so let me know if you need any more specs. Here's a screenie of my net_graph 3 when in our 32 slot servers:

This is just sitting in calm areas:

Here it is in the middle of battle:

Also, here are some error messages I get in console (just the red ones):

- This is what I get right when I enter the server:

That's exactly what I get, that many times. I don't know if this is normal or what.

I also get this message quite often:

Model '(null)' doesn't have attachment 'trail' to attach particle system 'rockettrail' to.

I then get these errors just simply hitting "Ok" to exit out of the "Options" menu without even changing anything. I also don't know if this is normal:

ConVarRef hud_quickinfo doesn't point to an existing ConVar
ConVarRef topcolor doesn't point to an existing ConVar
ConVarRef bottomcolor doesn't point to an existing ConVar
ConVarRef cl_himodels doesn't point to an existing ConVar

In conclusion, I do believe something is seriously wrong with my "In" numbers in my net_graph, and some other numbers could be wrong too but that's the only one that I can tell looks strange. Oh and my ping is crazy too.
EDIT: My ping isn't as bad as I've seen it in those screenies. In mid-battle it usually stays at around 400 ish. I guess it shows that in the 3rd one though.

Also, if you guys really want to see what I'm experiencing, here's a demo of me playing. The playback softens up the lag a lot, but you can tell it's bad by me swinging back and forth a lot and having terrible aim :P

EDIT: Also, I have not tried playing on a different network. I have wireless, but I'm hooked up atm.

Im not sure about the errors but a ping of 400 is really high, that could be the cause of the lag. I live on the east coast and i usually get around 30-40 ping on east coast servers and around 100 on west coast. My suggestion is try to find a server that is closer to you and see if it helps with the lag.

It's just weird because i could play fine on our 2Fort IR server when it was full just a couple days ago.

hmmm

Does this lag make your FPS drop really low?
and Does it make your computer lag too?

have you installed anything that may be suspicious in the last couple of days?

I say its either a virus/spyware.

What kind of internet do you have??? Dsl, cable, fiber???? I used to have quests high speed dsl and, I was getting about 100 ping on most severs. I then Switched to comcast high speed and, I'm now at 45 ping avg... for pretty much all severs. That could be the problem. My two cents any ways.

BTW I think its time warner cable on the east coast. (for cable) And verizon. (for fiber)

I've been getting a lot of lag lately as well, especially on the verizon servers. I have a 2.5 Intel Quad Core, a really high-end graphics card, 4GB memory, and I still get low FPS drops on certain parts of the map. Makes it less fun to play.

The Verizon servers have been lagging for a lot of people lately I usually get around 100 ping on them but they are on the west coast.

Well I'm at college so I'm using whatever the school provides. SpeedTest says it's Wesnet, but that's all it says.

And yeah I used to get some lag spikes here and there, but the game is literally unplayable with the lag that I'm getting.

And I'm running a full scan now. I'm also defragmenting, but I'm sure that won't do much to change the lag.

Your FPS is fine. Better than mine, I should say.

Your ping, Is the problem. If your running of the school's network, I have no idea how you could help your ping. Your problem shouldn't be an FPS problem though. Which, Actually sucks. If it was a FPS problem, It would be a much easier fix for you.

Oh yeah I knew the FPS was good. I was pretty happy with that. But do you guys know what exactly determines the number for the "In" area?

And nope I haven't tried reinstalling. I'll let the scan and defrag finish, try the game, and then reinstall if that fails.

It could be an issue with the way the network is handling the connection. Try dropping your graphics quality to bare-bones basics. If the lag still persists just as bad, it's a network issue.

And I believe "in" would be information about the game received from the game server. The lag could be from your comp. having to wait for enough pieces to come through the network for it to actually put it all together.

Really, anything below >40 fps dosen't feel smooth to me. But it shouldn't be like crazy lag with rubberbandding or anything.

Yep, all of the pics and demo are with 100% lowest quality possible, including low sound quality.

It looks to me like your computer is more than capable of handling TF2.

Could you run a speed test at speedtest.net and post the results here.

Also, you seem to be experiencing a lot of choke. There is a very nice tutorial on how to reduce choke in the CS:S Division Discussion, and it should apply to TF2 as well. I would suggest trying that.

reinstall and/or lower your graphic settings.

although you shouldnt need to lower your settings because from what it sounds like you could play fine before. if it's not too much hassle for you just reinstall, it might work.

And I'll check out that thread and see how that goes.

Yeah I've already lowered my graphic settings, I'll be reinstalling soon.

It looks like you have good internet I would try a server in texas or a verizon and see what kind of results you get.

Alright I tried a few servers in Texas and got fine results. About 42 ping, a couple mb/s slower download and upload speeds, but that's to be expected I'm sure.

EDIT: I'm reinstalling now.

Well, it seems that your school is either actively discouraging gaming on the network, or you need to talk to a tech about figuring a work around or configuring port forwarding.
