Well... truth be told, the Master Chief has MORE personality and character to him than Gordon Freeman. Although he's fairly limited in the games, his demeanor and character are vastly expanded upon in the novels, and he as a character is actually more of a victim.

The Master Chief talks very little in-game in order to promote the idea of the player actually BEING the Master Chief, so that the Spartan soldier doesn't feel too distant from the person with the controller. Gordon Freeman is the exact same in this sense, if not a little more extreme.

Right on. The thing I like most about the Half Life games is the story. It takes a quite a bit of intellect to truly understand everything.
