ATI Trumps Nvidia

The 285 isn't the best nVidia card. Tom's Hardware has some benchmarks where a single 5870 doesn't beat out a single GTX 295. A pair of 5870's in Crossfire beat a single 295, but they don't run it against a pair of 295's for some reason. The ATI reviews look promising, and the performance is beastly, but I was expecting more :(

ya thanks for another gpu war. thats all i ever wanted for christmas. Seriously, if you all go back to the beginning you'll realize that the two gpu's have better gameplay for certain games. So what if the 5870 kicks ass. We all know that nvidia is slow on the response, but we all know that it will come. SO STOP THE WAR.

I think nVidia is purposely waiting to see what ATI cards come out and then create something that dominates the ATI cards.

this isnt a thread for gpu wars and it wont as long as you dont bring it up. This is a serious discussion a new technology that is outperforming Nvidia in certain areas for a cheaper price. It wasnt a discussion about ATI is better than Nvidia. Dont bring up a subtopic about something being a flame war when it really isnt.

I agree with you.

I'm sorry if my post sounded like it was trying to flame ATI, it wasn't. The leaked benchmarks showed more promise than the released ones. But, it's a new card and the drivers are only going to get better.

The thing that excites me most is the new cards are high mid level cards and they perform equal to or better than nvidia's highest end cards. Imagine what the 5890 and any x2's are going to be like :O

The GPU war between ATI and nVidia benefits us gamers and tends to keep the prices in check so we can enjoy these new beasties :)

could be wrong...but isn't the 295 two chips running on one board? I always though that was kinda like x2 only condensed...

any ways, as obtuse as it may be, if you look at the history of graphics chip makers, you can almost see a pattern...ati releases the next generation of graphics! oh wait, now nvidia releases the next generation of graphics! oh wait, now ati releases the next generation of graphice! oh snap, here comes nvidia! wha th...is that ati! yes! yes! it is ati with the new next generation of graphics! omg! it's like a trend or something /sarcasm

Nice, once I can scrap up the $380 to buy it, I'll check it out.

My first graphics card was an ATI...those were the days...

Until nvidida's 40nm parts come in November/December.

The smaller processes(40nm vs 55nm) are cheaper to produce, and run cooler and use less energy. Obviously a 40nm can outperform a 55nm piece for cheaper.

Nvidia is gonna have a huge DIE size though, their single chip cards are expected to beat out ATI ones currently, but they aren't expected to be able to have two chips on one card. The DIE size is supposedly restricting them from being able to make a competitor to something like a 5850x2 or a 5870x2.
We will have to wait and see if they are capable of shrinking that DIE enough to make a dual-chip card.

Also, i dont think they are going to make an ATI 5890....the 4890 was only made to fill a gap and as a competitor to the GTX 275 until the new ATI 5 series cards came out. It was basically made to fill a slot in the timeline until the new cards came out.
I could be wrong though and maybe they will make a 5890 but i am guessing it wont be till around the same time they made the 4890, near the end of the 5 series lifecycle or atleast more than a full year into the lifecycle.
