I know it's some piece of software that I must have installed that has a copyright protection dll file. Open the DVD tray, it appears as a DVD ROM, close the tray, it's now a cd rom. Nero won't allow me to select DVD, can't drop and drag to it... I ran Malwarebyte, nothing malicious on the HDD, I've seen this before but nothing is mentioned in google search for this problem.

I've had a lot of trouble with Nero in the past - have you tried Imgburn? It's free and works seamlessly to burn DVDs and CDs. If it still doesn't recognize a blank disk, then you're looking at possibly a bad burner - are you able to test your machine with a different DVD+/-RW drive? I've seen this issue a few times while diagnosing computers for clients, and it's one of those two things most of the time. I think that I only had one case where there was a third party program interfering with the burn process.

Good luck!

Also try to uninstall nero then burn, then try to reinstall..

- Have you updated your burn drive?
- Have you been to any malicious websites?

Nero was doing the same thing on my dad's pc..installed another burning software and it worked fine...most likely a program (nero) issue

OK thx, I'll uninstall nero, but have you heard of these copyright protection measures that are included with things like Itunes and some games? It was the root problem once before. Now I can't find it mentioned online anywhere.

are you trying to play DVD's or Burn them, i use ISKYSOFT DVD RIPPER, and it turns it into a file that can be read from your computer and then you can burn it straight to a disc and play it. :)

Trying to burn, device manager shows no problems, but burner doesn't appear anymore in nero.

All versions of Nero that I know all the way back to 7 always leave behind information when uninstalling it.(a few folders and registry entries) Look at Nero's site for total removal tools.

Also remove SecuROM from your computer if you have it.(Link provided for SecuROM)
