The quality of the panel is determined more by the type of panel than the brand. Most brands sell different types of panels, so some are very very high quality, and some are similar to lower priced competitors.

Generally speaking, you can't get super high image quality without the higher price tag. If you are looking under $200, then you are looking at a panel that is a "TN" panel. These have lower color quality, but unless you are doing professional print work, it doesn't really matter. TN panels are great for gaming because they have fast response times, and don't suffer from input lag. They do lack a bit in viewing angle, but I have used TN panels for a while, and have never had a problem.

If you are buying local, go look at them! You will be able to decide if you want to pay more for a nicer panel. Just find the ones you like, write down the model numbers, and do some googling at home to figure out what type of panel the monitor uses, and whether or not you think you want to buy it.

This is patently wrong. It is a ratio you should look at. It tells you different information than what the static ratio tells you, but neither is necessary "better" than the other. The important thing to do when looking at ratios is that you don't compare one monitor's static contrast ratio to another monitor's dynamic contrast ratio.

You should read up and make sure you understand what a dynamic contrast ratio is before you tell people that it lies or that it isn't what you should look at. You are spreading false information about these measurements because you don't understand the difference in what they measure. Go read my link, it'll do you good.
 
An easy way to look at it is thusly: You should not buy based off of what is usually the marketed "dynamic" contrast ratio. And you shouldn't consider dynamic contrast ratio and static contrast ratio as depicting the same type of thing in the same type of environment.

Typically, higher is better. If you had to choose between the two - say...

A 500:1 static contrast ratio with a 5000:1 dynamic contrast ratio...

And...

A 1000:1 static contrast ratio with a 2000:1 dynamic contrast ratio...

You should go for the latter, as the higher static contrast ratio will show superior color depth and contrast, in spite of having a lower dynamic ratio.

However, for computer monitors - once you get up into the 1000:1 static contrast ratio range, you're looking at a pretty decent monitor and by that point it's all price, response time, and dynamic contrast ratio.

Response time is pretty key, in fact I'd put response time well above making sure your monitor has a 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio if you can get 2ms instead of 5ms. Especially for gaming.

In general, as a gamer - low response time is great (don't have any blur or ghosting type of situations in the movement of anything on the screen). 2ms is absolutely wonderful. Once you're in the 1000:1 static contrast ratio, it's not really that important to get a 50,000:1 dynamic. Maybe settle for 20,000:1 dynamic if you can walk away with a 2ms response time.

For artists and the like, print artists will obviously want a monitor that can display as much accurate color as possible to ensure they're working on exactly what will print off. And that can take a bit, but so long as you've got a decent monitor and have it calibrated correctly it's not a major issue. For artists working for digital works, meant to be viewed through another monitor - the goal is simple. Work off a monitor similar to the screens your audience is going to be looking at it through.

I personally love my monitor, sitting at 1000: 1 static contrast ratio, 20,000:1 dynamic, and a 2ms response time. It displays everything I could want beautifully.

ATI has HORRIBLE support for Linux. At most your able to do 2d stuff, but when you start doing 3d performance is horrible. With Linux I am able to modify the kernel and remove all the fluff and have a custom built OS for my gaming needs. I am not limited to Linux it's just that I have the best performance using it.

Anyone know of the highest version of Nvidia cards that use a single slot spec?

Something like this would be much more powerful than a 9500. Just make sure your PSU can handle it.

his CPU is gonna bottleneck just about any gpu he gets
seriously save up all the cash you got now, and just try to get a new computer come holidays
8800/9800 is still a waste of your time...upgrading in general is. buy parts and build a new rig or again, wait for the holidays
