Hey, I got a ton of photos from Germany and Paris from when I was there. My dad got most of them on his D70 which takes pictures in .NEF and .xmp. I am trying to convert them to .JPG so I can upload to photobucket and facebook to share with friends but photobucket doesnt accept .NEF or .xmp. So if anyone knows how to convert them that would be great.

You could probably open them in paint and save them as a .JPG but I don't know how great the quality would be.

When I had a camera that saved in .nef, I used iMatch. You can get a free trial version that lasts 30 days from that link. I'm pretty sure that Photoshop can deal with those files also.

There is a plugin that can read NEF files. Also IrfanView has a great batch convert tool.

I use Infranview for anything image related.

It would be best to use the camera software that was provided with the camera. Warrenty doesn't cover damage caused by 3rd party software including using Paint or the Scanner and Camera Wizard built into Windows.

Camera company's use uncommon/proprietary file formats to enhance and secure their products they make. You can compare the file formats to how cell phones differ in the way of their plug in outlets for charging them.

If you don't have that software and the warrenty is gone then using 3rd party software is about your only option.

Change them in photoshop if nothing else will work, thats more of a long route to do it but it will work.

Here's a free trial of Nikon's CaptureNX2. It retains the NEF information from the file. If you don't care about that try some of what the others have offered. You can also get a plug-in for photoshop that will allow you to read the files too. We use a D50, D200 and D300, and iirc the D70 NEF differs from that of the 200/300, so make sure you get the correct one. Have fun!
