Is anyone here running windows vista?

I've been thinking about upgrading from Windows XP sp2 to Windows Vista to get DirectX10 but I've heard some bad things right now about Vista. Can anyone comment on this? Is it worth the upgrade right now or should I wait awhile and keep using XP sp2.

Ok. Here is the deal with Vista and XP.


It all comes down to what you like.


I have been using XP ever since it has come out. I love every part of it. When vista came our I was hesitant. Reviews were all over the board. This past month I built a new custom PC for my self and loaded it with vista. I love it. People say you get less FPS but i mean come on. 5 fewer FPS isn't going to kill you. It's not like your in CAL:I and winning a million dollars every match.

Vista is eye candy. And if your one of those people like me that loves eye candy, GET IT.

Security is great. Ok you will get annoyed by the pop up that comes up every time you want to install something. YES it is annoying. YES you will get over it within a week. and YES it does make your system more secure when talking about trojans and all those other adware things that install themselves.

If you could tell me your system specs so i can determine if you have the right parts to run it fairly fast.

Oh and who ever said vista was slow? It boots for me in 30 seconds at most.

If your gonna upgrade, do it to when you think is best. People say vista is not ready yet. I haven't had ANY problems with it. No driver issues, nothing. People say that its Vista's fault for not having driver support. Its the companies problem, they weren't ready for Vista.


I would get some more opinions from some other people but, what it all comes down to is personal taste. Could you tell me your system specs?

I'm not too concerned about being able to run Vista properly, I'm pretty sure my system can handle it. But, off the top of my head my specs are as follows:

AMD64FX-60 dual core processor 2.66 each
EVGA NFORCE-4 SLI AMD 939PIN MB
500 power supply
2 gigs ram
dual geforce 7900 gs (Had dual geforce 7800gts but one of them got fried and I couldn't find a replacment)
250 gig hard drive
realtek AC97 audio
creative 7.1 surround sound system
asus vento 3600 chassis case

that should be enough for you to give me your opinion. Thanks.

For me, I'm all about getting the best gaming experience, that's why I've been thinking on vista so I can have DirectX 10.

Oh yea thats all perfect. It should run very smoothly. DX10 is awesome. I got LostPlanet with my 8800GTS and although its not the best game play, graphically its amazing. I personally think DX10 is worth the vista upgrade. Vista its self is pretty awesome so my opinion is go for it. Your system can handle it so i say go for it!

Is they 7900 a DX10 card? If not, upgrade anyway and wait for about a month because some new GPU's are coming out and the 8800's might drop in price and you can grab yourself one for a cheap price =].

Ok thanks for your input M3dley. I had actually been thinking of getting a couple of 8800's for awhile. But now i'll wait on the new GPU's so see if they do go down in price.

Geforce 7 series are only DX9. Only the 8 series have DX10 as well as ATI's HD 2000 series.

Make sure you turn UAC (User Account Control) off when you get it. Its a real pain in the butt. Oh yeah, Vista is so win. Just don't go back to XP again or you're going to cry because of the lack of eye candy. Get it. ASAP.

two: and this is the important one: all you people who turn of UAC need to stop doing such. There is more to UAC than those pop up messages (which after installation really dont happen almost ever by the way, only for the first week or so). UAC is present in windows XP - just so everybody is aware, and it is definately a critical thing to protect windows. It keeps track of user permissions and prevents programs, viruses, and spyware from installing themselves and doing other things on yoru computer - it really is much more than just those stupid pop up things (whcih I like anyhow but thats not the point). You guys may find them annoying but without them any process can run anything it wants whenever it wants which is enharently bad.

You didnt turn off UAC in XP so please stop doing it in vista. In a few eyars people are going to wonder why they have so much junk and wonder why vista sucks so bad while the rest of us will have no idea what you are talking about because our computer run great.

Plus, in Linux and Unix you have to type your password out everytime you use sudo or psudo but this allows you to click without a password so really is it that annoying? (maybe you think so but PLEASE just understand that you are not turning off those messages you are turning off ALL OF THE safety features built into windows when you turn of UAC.)

Yeah, totally agree. The popups get annoying but are totally worth it. It saves your computers ass.
