For all you fine dandies, running around with you cases bein` normal....COME and get me I say I'm a "Grim" bloody fable with a bad ass case to prove it!

(so i rip off lines, so what)

As most of you know Myself and a compadre of mine from work, Solon "Grim" Montanio have been constructing the Lambda Core -- his gaming rig. The idea was very far fetched as it is build inside of it's own DESK

*I WOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT WHAT YOU SEE THE PHOTOS IS THE ENTIRE CASE, THIS IS NOT A DRAWER TO THE CASE BY ANY MEANS. IT IS THE CASE ITSELF AND HAS A SHEET OF PLEXI COVERING THE TOP OF IT. JUST MAKING SURE EVERYONE IS ON THE SAME PAGE HERE*
MATERIALS



  • 2x 1*6*8 lumber
  • 1*3/2 aluminum
  • 14’ 7/16 aluminum trim
  • 30*48 sheet Plexiglas
  • 12’ orange wire loom
  • White board
So it started:

As an idea that had been tossed around with a guy at work I know. He had been wanting a special case mod for a while but not exactly sure what to do. He wanted to be easily mobile and yet something no one else had thought of. So, I thought to myself – “Self, what is unique and sleek. New, and cool. Mobile, and not fragile.” Then it hit me, “Why not put the very computer INSIDE of the desk it is apart of.

THE CASE

So we started by actually making the case frame out of the lumber. The perimeter measures 36*24 as seen here

[FONT=&quot]The next thing that we did was go to the white board and cut out a section that would be the exact size of the bottom and fit nicely. It was a perfect fit and will look great against the cold cathodes yet to be installed in this one of a kind case.[/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]You would not believe it so see it, but that saw he’s holding is the exact one used to cut that white board. The jigsaw was actually over heating and burning the particle board base of the white board itself so we went to the circular saw. Crazy to see and do and it threw a lot of dust but it sure as hell makes for a good picture[/FONT]

Then came time to cut the dividing board for the inside of the case. This will serve as support for the entire case as well as a divider between the future power supply and the rest of the components. This is where the case begins to take shape.


And so my dear AMERICAN computer builders, ends the first day of pictures – So I leave you with this, the revelation of my identity. For the second time only on Edge Gamers Organization you get to see

THE LAMBDA CORE WAS ONE MONTH AND ONE WEEK IN THE MAKING AND TOOK FOUR PEOPLE JUST TO MAKE THE CASE. WE HAD HER RUNNING LAST NIGHT AND IT IS AMAZING. THE FANS ARE SIMPLY AMAZING TO HEAR AS TWO OF THEM MOVE 119 CUBIC FEET PER MINUTE!

ohhh so its like a drawer, with your computer in it huh
thats actually a pretty slick idea...good stuff

would be neat if it was like a center drawer right, and you pull it out and have your keyboard/mouse on top of it haha
 
nice work but.. I honestly don't get the point of this way too large case.
 
Haha, that's awesome.

When it's mounted do the case fans blow air out the sides away from the user, or would the user be in line to get hit by the warm air?

Yeah that thing is pretty big and it's like a drawer haha. Cool idea.
 
The owner and Co-conspirator

Well my first post had better be about this i guess. First off thank you all for the approval on the case (i know it is a little over the top). Second it is 90% complete so far i need to put the legs, lights, aluminum frame, and glass on top before it is finished. Third it is going to be my desk and i will probably add a shelf or bin underneath it to have storage. Fourth YES it will be portable so LAN party people will have to put up with the 2 X 56 dBs fans like i have to. Last i would like some suggestions as to what color of cold Cathode lights would look good with it he fans that are already glowing white (would prefer another color) I'm open up to suggestion. Once again thank you all and I hope to be gaming with y'all in the near future. Add me on Steam and/or XboxLive (Gamer tag- Grim799). Game On \.../ (>.<) \.../ Dudes!

P.S.: Next project for Me and (hopefully) Matt - Computer in an Aquarium with living fish ... guess what it will be watercooled!!!! lol look for it in the future... and to be blatent it will actually be up for sale ... fish not included and most likely not portable

It's definitely different, but I'm not quite sold on it. It doesn't matter if you're not going to overclock it, but I see some issues with airflow. With those tornado fans mounted in the opposite direction, and the video card acting as a large barrier, that channel of air probably isn't as effective as it could be. Some air will be forced over the video card, but I think a majority will try to go around the back of the card, which is directly in the way of the oncoming channel of air going the other direction. Think of it like walking in a crowded hallway, with the Freshmen going the opposite direction and you keep bumping into them.

It'll work, but I don't think it'll be as good as it could be. Plus, if those are the fans I'm thinking about, it'll be irritatingly noisy.

It was a good first project. Always make your next project better than the previous, and always strive for perfection.
 
It's definately a cool idea, but not one I would want for myself. Not only does it seem loud, but also as has been pointed out - it could be more efficient. This is not to say that it could be more efficiently done with that particular idea, though that probably could be the case using different materials and various other things. There are multiple factors contributing, but as one simple matter - look at it this way. Yes, it has a lot of room for heat to dissipate, but that also means a lot of room for warm air to swirl around before it gets thrown out and replaced with cool air.

I don't doubt that it keeps your components nice and cool. But at the same time, my system runs very similar temps, but it's a nice sleek black, takes up a very small amount of space, and I can't even hear it running with it's 7 fans.

Hence...

Cool idea! I'm glad you're happy with it.

...but...

It seems at the same time, that there was a lot of effort put into it for something that's about as efficient as the more efficient regular cases, while at the same time being bigger, and louder as a cost for it being unique and a desk.

Reason for the maddness

OK just to clarify b/c I'm not sure if i have yet or not (absent mindedness is a sign of genuis.....i think). The case was designed and built from the ground up for a very good reason.. it was designed to look like it was put together by the crazy and over the top guys at Black mesa. Since it is my favorite game series and one of the first i ever played when it was a quake mod (feather thats for you man). I just loved how everything was larger than life and yet just barely seemed to be able to contain the power running through them. A model of efficiency it may not be but try to think of it on the terms of the actual device that it was named after.

What about black lights or something UV? you could always paint something on the inside with UV reacting paint, since you've got the nice BIG window.
