Alright im having this problem again.
If i try to overclock my CPU *AT ALL* steam won't work properly. sometimes it won't even boot up for some stupid annoying reason and i have to ctrl/alt/del close it out. when it does boot up it takes a very long time, and when i get into CSS all of my favourites are gone, server listing takes forever to pull up anything. and when i try to connect to a server i get this error: "A connection to the Steam VAC servers could not be made. For troubleshooting network errors visit steamisstupidblahblah.com"

I must stress that MY OVERCLOCK IS STABLE. Its very stable, hell it isn't even overclocked much. Its been prime95 and then some programs tested and again...its stable. so do not say otherwise. Steam is the only thing that has a problem with this overclock, and i cannot figure out why, or how to fix it.....i want to fix it.

Comp Specs
CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 550 3.1ghz OCed to 1.45V/3.5ghz
MOBO: Asus M2N68-AM SE2
RAM: 2GB (2x1gb) OCZ PC2-8500 DDR2 1066
GPU: BFG Geforce 8600 GT 512mb OCed to 700 core, 1540 shader, 825 memory
COOLING: stock air cooling - idle temps between 32-36c (depending on ambient temp) with loads not exceeding 50c

I can overclock stable to quite a bit higher than what its at now, i just dropped it to see if the problem persists with steam...and it does regardless of any OC i have, even if its just to 3.2 ghz it doesn't work properly.
All OC attempts are being made via BIOS, raising just the voltage slightly as well as the multiplier. (200 x 17.5 = 3500).
Any tips or anything?? would you suggest me overclocking in a different way that may affect the behaviour of steam...like lowering multiplier, higher bus speed or what.
From what i've gathered, theres basically no information found on google regarding this. There has been one post made on steam support forums, pertaining to tf2 but the same problem, and nothing much is said...just kept saying his OC is not stable.

HELP

Do you have any custom configs set in the CS:S launch menu thing?

I used to have a similar problem overclocking my old PC slightly. It turned out that the timing/speed for the PCI-e bus were changed a very small amount, causing my ethernet controller to display some very strange connectivity issues. Do you have a program that you can use to check PCI-e or other clock settings from within Windows?

i have CSS launch option set for "-heapsize 1048576" because i have 2 gigs of ram, as well as an autoexec config. i'll try to remove those to see if it has any effect.
as for the pci-e slot, its constant at its default 100 mhz, and again i don't have any problems with any other programs

EDIT: still happens when i take those things out. It seems like its some sort of internet problem, but only for steam. because when i overclock to only 3.2 ghz i can connect to the game, but its very glitchy, plays at very low rates and i have a higher ping...and the higher i overclock the worse it gets, until the point where it won't even connect to steam let alone CSS.
but i have no idea what would effect that, or why it only happens to steam. While overclocked i did speedtest, and got the same results when im not overclocked...nothing changes except the speed of my CPU

What operating system are you running?

As for how your method of over-clocking, I don't that how you do it would affect Steam. As long as it's stable I would think it should work. This seems to be quite a pickle.

Since this seems to be a Steam problem, you could try cutting ClientRegistry.blob, pasting it somewhere else (in case you need it again), and then starting Steam again.
