Hi i am looking into buying a new monitor to upgrade from my current 6 year old CRT to a 20-22" LCD. What resoution would I need for a monitor this size? I have look at Newegg and at bestbuy and the resolutions very from 1600x900 up to 1920x1080, for my maximum price which is $150. I have found thisone but the only down side to itis that it uses VGA instead of DVI, I do have a DVI to VGA adapter on my graphic card but will this effect the picture quality at all? Also if you have any monitor recommendations under $150 please post them.

What I've learned is that the maximum resolution size is not what you should worry about, rather the refresh rate. A monitor that can do a resolution of 2400x3200 but only has a refresh rate of 60 may not be as good as a monitor that does a max of 1200x1600 at 125. (Not to say that either of these monitors actually exist, I'm just making a point)

A higher refresh rate will allow the game to play smoother since it will be able to redraw the screen at a quicker pace. If you are going to play the game at 1024x768 regardless of what monitor you have, why not go for the one that has a better refresh rate instead of the one with the largest display.

Just my opinion *shrug*

I can't really post any suggestions since I'm at work posting from my phone =D

Ok guys thanks for the recommendations, im not entirely sure what im gonna get yet, i think im going to go to bestbuy this weekend and see if i can get a floor model for cheap, if not ill consider one of the ones you guys posted.

Unfortunately what you have said is incorrect. Refresh rate only applies to CRT monitors since LCD monitors do not continuously refresh their images only when needed instead of being updated continuously.

What you want to look at is the refresh rate which is calculated differently according to different manufacturers...But basically anything under 8-10 is enough. You don't need 2ms as you won't notice the difference due to the physiological limitations in our eye.

To be honest unless you are spending >300-400 you probably won't notice a difference between the monitors and unless you are picky about colour or do video editing/art design you probably won't need to spend that much.

Just find a monitor that looks good to you, meets the price, is big enough, is adjustable enough for your use and you should be fine. Keep in mind that bigger resolutions require more graphics power to run games.

Hot Deal!!
Check out this 23'' Monitor at 1920 x 1080 resolution for $169.00! It's the Canadian Dell site so if you go to the American hopefully you will have the same deal. This is a really good buy IMO, great adjustability, warranty. I have used many Dell monitors and can attest to their quality.

Edit** I hope you are Canadian since it's 209.00 at American prices.

Nope im in the US, and im am going to be using the monitor for 3D modeling using 3dsmax but it is mostly going to be used for gaming.

This is incorrect. The human eye can see the difference in a series of images at INCREDIBLE rates, we're talking the difference between various series of images even if both examples are in the hundreds of frames per second range. We can certainly tell the difference between 5 and 2ms on a monitor. The rate at which our eyes detect fluid motion is only somewhat measurable on its own, but we're not talking individual frames recording in life by our eyes to create a fluid image for our brains (we don't even have enough evidence to support that our eyes operate in such a manner) - we're talking about our eyes interpreting the difference in fluidity in a series of images that our eyes aren't running through themselves.

In fact, the human eye can detect the difference in fluid moving images - even if the images are moving at the same frame rate, simply depending on what type of device the series of images is coming from. One will seem more fluid, and real.

CRTs and LCDs both have refresh rate, they just mean different things.

from their definitions LCD refresh rate is more important, because it's defined as the speed at which the screen received new images from the video card.

it's one of those life long arguments (the life of the LCD at least) that people claim they can see the difference or feel the difference in frame rates and insist on having likw 150+ FPS becuase it makes their game "better"

the LCDs refresh rate basically limits how many FPS you can actually see at one time, you know that setting you can turn on and off in Graphic setting called VSync/Vertical Sync that's what it does, it syncs your FPS to what your monitor can actually display.

your monitor can't show more then 60, now I will give having always more then 60 as making things smoother because that means it won't drop below that point where it would actually be noticeable but bragging about 200+ FPS or something doesn't mean anything

I know someone will say they can tell the different and blah blah, it's ok not everyone agrees

You can also watch woot.com and sellout.woot for monitor deals. They occasionally have 22-24 inch monitors for cheap.
